Last year Tony Stewart ran in the midget race and won. Guess this year he won't be able to that but he and other NASCAR folks will be on hand.
SOUTH BOSTON, VA (OCT. 3, 2002)—A host of NASCAR celebrities will be on hand at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway Saturday evening, Oct. 19, to help the Speedway in its efforts to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The current list of participating celebrities includes drivers Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader, Morgan Shepherd and Hermie Sadler, and legendary car owner Junie Donlavey. Additional drivers and car owners are expected to make the 60-mile trip from Martinsville to South Boston to support the Speedway’s Make-A-Wish efforts. USAC Midgets will be competing at South Boston Saturday, Oct. 19, while Martinsville Speedway will be hosting the Virginia 500 Winston Cup event Sunday, Oct. 20.
At South Boston, one lucky fan will win a pace car ride with Winston Cup championship contender Tony Stewart, while all of the celebrities will participate in a autograph session beginning at 6 p.m. Autograph Vouchers will be issued to the first 800 fans enter the facility. Members of the Make-A-Wish foundation will sell tickets to race fans for a 50/50 raffle, while the Speedway will donate 2003 South Boston season passes and VIP Suite Passes for a Winston Cup event as additional raffle prizes. The Speedway will also make a cash donation equal to the money raised by the 50/50.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses in an effort to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western Virginia, the extension of the Foundation South Boston will support Oct. 19, was founded in 1987. In 15 years, it has granted more than 1,100 wishes to children from 82 counties and 26 independent cities throughout the Commonwealth. The average cost of a wish is $5,000, and over 87 cents of each donated dollar is used to fulfill wishes.
