“@NASCARONFOX: Sunday's Daytona 500 posted 10.0/22 overnite, +30% over 2012s 7.7/13; Best metered market rating for Daytona 500 since 2006.”

Danica factor or big wreck on Saturday?

I work with a small group of people, none of which are NASCAR fans. Two of my coworkers watched the race this weekend. Both because of Danica. Will they watch next week? Probably not. Will all that tuned in this past weekend because of the Danica factor watch next week? Probably not. Will some? Probably. That's not a bad thing IMO.

Yeah for Danica. It's a shame the nascomedians didn't pay close attenting to all those practice sessions and adjust the aero package so all the new fans Danica attracted could see a real race.

I have a feeling 100% of those new viewers came away saying "yep, nascar is what everyone says. A bunch of rednecks driving in circles".

Top 5 cities for Daytona 500 ratings: 1. Greensboro, NC; 2. Indianapolis; 3. Charlotte; 4. Jacksonville, Fla; 5. Dayton, Ohio.

Again, yay for Danica. I'm sure I will eventually grow numb to all the Danica hype going on around here.

 You never even thought about the 2006 ratings until you read this.

I think Andy did mention it some place on here, someone did for sure I know that much.

Found it

I'll say this - I think the 2006 Daytona 500 being the most watched NASCAR race in history is in serious jeopardy.
it was in the thread about qualifying for this race.

That's what I was saying about the qualifying .The ratings were not up on that day until it was over and she had won. The payoff was at the 500 when folks tuned in to see her .I had several friends who tuned in to see her race and stayed to the finish. Will it continue ? Don't know about all of them , but I didn't think all those new Jeff Gordon fans would stick around either .

I reckon my posting here has attracted new fans to Nascar

This is exactly what I was worried about. :( A great opportunity to show off NASCAR to a ton of first-time viewers, and they end up watching the most boring race in a long time. First time viewers aren't going to realize that yesterday's 500 was highly out of the ordinary and are going to think that all races are like yesterday's.

I think you may be over reacting just a skosh. Most newbies probably doesn't really know what makes a good race or a bad race. Infact, I think a super speedway like Daytona where the track is large enough that there is a front of the racing group and a rear of the racing group, can make it easier for a newbie to keep track of a particular car or driver. A smaller track like Bristol where the cars are lapping each other and the race leader can be right behind or in front of the last place car could be very confusing to a first time viewer. I think you might be surprised at the results if you took a poll about how enjoyable the Daytona 500 was for a first time viewer.

You have to remember that a lot of us older fans started watching Nascar when it was unusual for more than two or three cars to finish on the lead lap. Nascar racing today is far more exciting than it ever was . The fact that a few ultra sophisticated fans can be found here critiquing each and every race , is far removed from the average fan.;)

Lots of people think the tracks are all the same.

I'd say I agree with you. Great opportunity to bring in new fans and we get a race that looks like a bunched up 1.5 mile track.

I know if I watched this race for the first time and saw more lead changes on pit road then on the track i'd be hesitent to invest a another full sunday on a race.

Gotta get these new viewers to a race, thats how I changed my mind about racing and how a few of my friends changed their mind about racing.

Guess the numbers have been revised a bit. Most watched Daytona 500 since 2008. Considering all the hype, it's not impressive at all.

I thought the Danica hype would provide a bigger boost than what it did. Time to come to grips. It's not the economy. People are losing interest in NASCAR and little gimmicks here and there (yes, Danica's a racer, but to NASCAR, she's just a marketing gimmick) won't sustain the sport. NASCAR needs to take a serious look, as I think they have with the new car and the addition of Eldora, and realize that boring ass races on 1.5 mile tracks don't turn anybody on.

Oh, and when they renovate Daytona, maybe instead of adding a bunch of seats the won't be able to fill, maybe they should take out the bottom 20 rows.

Does it really matter why the ratings are up? More people are watching Nascar and that's ALL that matters.

I'm just saying, it's not sustainable. This was, by all measurements, a much smaller than anticipated ratings boost. And given that the race genuinely sucked, I'm not sure many of those first time viewers were turned on at all.

I know they just released their new renderings late last week but I definitely feel that's something they'll go back to the drawing board to work on.

Gee , I said exactly the same thing about Jeff Gordon and it turned out better than I thought it would.;)

Jeff Gordon won four championships. I hope Danica proves me wrong because I'd love to see her fans stick around, but I strongly doubt she's going to win 80+ races and four championships.

Sorry , I didn't know when he started as a brash little kid who was all hype and media that he was going to win some races . He also brought millions of fans into the sport that didn't give a crap about Nascar or stock car racing , they just wanted Jeff's hat and autograph.I honestly didn't believe one of those fans would be here today.

Like a lot of Jeff's fans I was a Richard Petty fan and was at Atlanta for his last race and needed a long term driver and who better than a young kid that drove the race mostly sliding sideways like he was on dirt. I still like and respect the guy.

What's the over/under on how many times the word 'boring' will be used to describe next weeks race on this forum?
