Bill Elliott's side of the story

It's true. I'm going to that event. Now they are scrambling to find someone else.

Everything I have known about Bill for many years tells me there is more to this than has met with our eyes. Bill was NASCAR's most popular driver for years and years... Something just doesn't jell with that article. Certainly an article with such venom will cause a response from Bill.. We need both sides before making any decision about the validity of that thing.

I'm not defending or bashing Elliott, but he has said all along he doesn't want to race full time. It could be this appearance was signed before the Wood Brothers called him about the #21. If that's the case, he probably wants that weekend off since it looks like he'll be in that ride for a while longer.

If your scenario is correct then Bill should have honored his original commitment. The Wood Brothers could always put Schrader or Jon back in the car if Bill needs some time off.

Jon isn't ready to get back into racing, but Kenny would probably love to get back in the sadle.

As Betsy said, there is another side to this story.

I am not surprised about this in the least bit.

Bill had many fans. And they were good a stuffing the ballot box.

But behind the scenes, he didn't have very many kind words for his fans.

Got any back up for that staement. Many of the workers at Harry Mellings Sylvan resort In Gaylord, Michigan whom I've spoken with said Bill was an absolute treat when he visisted there and was excellent with the other guests.

There's a wide variety of opinions of the Awesome one here on this board. As a long time fan of Bill's, my opinion is probably a little too biased for anyone to care, but here goes. SO WHAT! First off, and forgive me you Canadians that are here, but our "friends" from the north haven't been acting very friendly of late and Bill is a good old southern boy who is more than likely a Republican. Secondly, the story doesn't explain the remark "Stop bugging me". That sort of makes me think that the promoters at that track have been in talks with Elliott, or his agent for a while with him or his agent telling them that he wouldn't be there.

I can tell you that few drivers have ever been caught in a compremising situation that hasn't ticked off a fan or two. The Petty's are probably close to that, but I'm sure that through the years, one of them have made someone mad. I've heard stories before about Bill, but again I say, so what. If you don't care for him, don't worry. He's not a threat to beat your fav any time soon. I can see it now, comparing Elliott to Stewart and Harvick. Oh yeah, that's three acorns from the same oak tree.

If the track has a leg to stand on, there will be more from this story. If they don't, this story will die as quickly as it appeared.

If you are looking for a news story, no.

I am talking about people that have had contact with the man and listened to how he talked about his fans. A lot of respect was lost over some of the comments.

And I will not divulge names as they are people in the race community. In most cases I am willing to give a guy the benefit of a doubt. But I have heard too many negative comments about this driver and I tend to not be surprised by what was said in this article.

Guido, I know who killed Kennedy. I was told by people but, I can't divulge their names. Let's just say they are part of our government and a local newspaper delivery boy who got A's in gynocology school so I am taking it as gospel.

I don't see the point in your mocking commentary. I trust my associates in the business.

Believe what you want and I will do the same.

Well, I just wanted to show that anybody can claim anything by saying "I can't tell you who said this or that but,...". I also find it funny about the ballot stuffing comment. Not that it matters to me but, you are pretty much mocking or putting down Elliott fans with that statement. In fact, it also says that you beleive that only the Elliott fans had the technology and intelligence to figure out how to win with the same tools every other fan has. They must be one savvy bunch. We all have our opinions and I always find it funny when somebody claims they know something but refuse to qualify it. I am by no means calling you a liar or anything. I was just having a little fun with it.

I've been a fan of Bill Elliots' for almost 25 years, hell i bought 2 T-Bird Turbo Coupes back in the 80s just so i could drive the car Bill drove...lol. I have become a Kasey fan because he drives Bills' #9. I always thought Bill was a gentleman on and off the track and one hell of a racer. I haven't heard any negative stories about him, i'm sure there are a few out there, just as there are about any driver. Bill has his reasons, one being he is driving full time right now, but what ever they are i'm sure we won't hear the entire story from either side. I agree with you Buck that i think this story will blow over quickly and in a few weeks or days for that matter, we won't hear anything more about it.

If your scenario is correct then Bill should have honored his original commitment. The Wood Brothers could always put Schrader or Jon back in the car if Bill needs some time off.

The only reason Elliott is in that car is because he has those past champions' provisionals to use so they can get back into the top 35. The funny thing is he has actually made races on time and still has provisionals left to use, thus prolonging his stay.

Oh I know why he's in the car but if he needs a break from driving like was reported then get out of the car.
Not knowing the story but going on these reports if he made the agreement to be there then he needs to be there.
My point was there are other drivers who could get into the car in the interim.

It still isn't much time for the track to find somebody else but, it's more than the 2 weeks that the speedway claims.

From Jayski:
UPDATE: Bill Elliott wishes to respond to the allegations that he rescinded an agreement to appear in the IWK 250 Pro All Stars Series at Riverside International Speedway, scheduled for Saturday, July 21 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. "I steadfastly deny that there was ever a final contract, spoken or written, in which I agreed to both attend and compete in the event at the Riverside International Speedway. Riverside International Speedway officials contacted my representatives in April 2007 to gauge my interest in competing in this event. Race officials sent a lengthy appearance schedule in conjunction with the event. Although my family and I strongly considered attending the event, on May 15th we communicated to race officials that we were leaning against attending, due in large part to the excessive amount of travel time the commitment would involve. Speedway and event officials were notified in writing on June 5th, 2007 that I had declined their offer to participate in the event. My family and I are disappointed that speedway and event officials continue to portray us in a negative light as a result of this matter.(Motorsports Management International)(7-12-2007)

I guess it now turns into a he said, they said situation unless someone has signed on the dotted line.

Either way, the promoters have Regan Smith for the race.

I would like to think that Elliot was in the right, but if he was, why was the event and press release posted on his website? If there is someone who is iffy about their possible participation in an event, they wouldn't post it on their website. If he did cancel on June 15, like he said, why did he not remove it from his website at that time? What quacks like a duck.......

Speaking as someone who has been in this positions, sometimes the webmaster is the last person to know of a schedule/appearance change. A driver's web site should never been considered as the absolute word.

I immediately went to his website to see if it was there. I couldn't find it but, I'm not a member so I thought maybe it coulda been in the member area. But, a few of his club members were saying on another forum that they never heard anything about the event and never saw it on his website. Looking at the awesome bill forum, there was no mention of it at all and they post anything and everything about Bill. I would think that it woulda made it on Jayski too but, there has never been any mention of it on there either.

I went to the link first provided my Jayski to the preee release on the Bill Elliott's site on the day of the story. That page has since been removed. I agree with you, MRM, that the webmaster is the last to know if info changes. I do think the event promoters are a little sore and are using the media to make it look worse than it really is.

Good grief that is lame, to use this to get a dig in. Seriously, do you honestly believe that US - Canada relations would have anything at all to do with it. lol man o man.
I'll leave it at that, this isn't the place to express what I want to in response to a comment that idiotic.

Maybe Bill saw the movie Strange Brew and decided that Canada wasn't the place for him. a?

Feel free to PM me for your response. We can carry on that way if you like.

Hey Buck, do you remember what Stan said way back when Bill got the McDonalds sponsorship? I always laugh when I think of that.

No, I don't remember. Refresh my memory. But it wouldn't surprise me at anything he, Bill, would say. I've heard so many stories about him that I could write a book. But attitude is all in what you put into it. I am sure that those who never liked him will never change their minds and the same can be said about most of us who did like him. BTW, have you seen Stan since the last time? Red chats with him quite often.

Buck, I see Stan when I do hospitality. He has lost a lot or weight.

I remember when Bill got the McDonalds ride. Stan said "Now McDonalds has two red headed clowns."

Widda told me that one when she was still with him. LOL

Yeah, now I remember. Stan's never really cared much for Bill. I guess when you can see all the drivers all the time, you can have a totally different opinion on them than what the fans can have.
