Car owner Ray Evernham had until last Friday to convince Dodge officials to allow UPS to sponsor Kasey Kahne's Dodge next year, and apparently he couldn't do it. That means UPS will sponsor Greg Biffle's Ford next year.

While on vacation with his family in Myrtle Beach, Scott Riggs injured both feet while unloading his jet ski in an oyster bed. The wounds required 12 stitches in the ball of left foot and eight stitches in the right big toe. The injury to Riggs has caused Valvoline Evernham Racing retain former NASCAR champion Bill Elliott to stand by for this weekend's NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race in Sonoma.

Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway adds another wrinkle to the let-him-pass-or-not issue because there aren't a lot of places on the twisting road course where it's easy to pass. NASCAR refers to the unwritten rules as "the gentleman's agreement.'' But, as Jeff Gordon said after Darlington, "I think we found out who the gentlemen were and who the gentlemen weren't.''

David Gilliland's victory last weekend at Kentucky Speedway is considered by many the biggest upset in the history of NASCAR's Busch Series. Now all he has to do is top that performance this week. Gilliland, who followed his father, Butch, into racing, is going to try to qualify for his first Nextel Cup event Friday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. He's going to try it with a team, CJM Racing, that has yet to qualify for a Cup race this season.

NASCAR team owner Jack Roush received the highest honor the Ford Motor Company bestows in racing when he was presented with the Spirit of Ford Award last week at world headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. Roush was hired as an engineer at Ford in 1964, but got the racing bug when he joined a group called The Fastbacks two years later. The group was made up of Ford employees who competed in drag racing on weekends.
