The top four drivers in the points standings have a mathematical chance of leaving Kansas City as the points leader. Should Jimmie Johnson win at Kansas and lead the most laps, Mark Martin must finish fourth or better to maintain the points lead.

Only three drivers have won the Winston Cup championship without posting a victory on a short track: Dale Earnhardt (1993), Bobby Labonte (2000) and Jeff Gordon (2001).

-- The points leader after the 20th race of the season went on to win the championship in each of the last nine years. (Sterling Marlin)

-- The winner of the Brickyard 400 has gone on to become the champion in each of the last four years. (Bill Elliott)

-- Under the current point system, never has a season's Winston Cup champion finished last in a race twice.

There have been 12 first-time race winners on the Winston Cup circuit since the 2000 Daytona 500. There were only 15 first-time winners during the entire decade of the 1990s.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has led at least one lap in 16 races in 2002, more than any other driver.

-- Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart have each led the most laps in four races, more than any other drivers.

-- Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart have all scored 90 lap-leader bonus points, more than any other drivers.

-- Forty-four drivers have led at least one lap in 2002.
