Bizarre Idea On Changing the Points System

On Inside Winston Cup Jimmy Spencer said he had a conversation with an unnamed NASCAR official. The official told him that they were considering using the first 26 races to determine a top 10 in points. Those 10 would be the only ones who could win the title and only their performance over the final 10 races would count toward the title.

So who ever the top 10 in points were, they would wipe the slate clean after Richmond and use the combined performance at New Hampshire, Dover, Talladega, Kansas, Charlotte, Martinsville, Atlanta, Phoenix, Darlington, and Homestead to determine the champion.

Spencer sounded serious and this didn't sound like he was joking.

But it all sounds like a bizarre joke to me.

Here's hoping that Brain either has a strange sense of humor or was jerking Jimmy around.

It would defintely create a whole lot more interest in the last ten weeks of the season. But it would become like other major sports where you don't pay much attention until "the playoffs". Which is what the last ten races would become, playoffs. Once you knew you were locked into the top ten you could coast until those last ten races.

I think that Jimmy was "full-of-it".

I dont think that the system needs changing but it probably will. Best bet is for them to add 10 to 20 points to the winner and giving the sam number of points to all cars finishing lower than 30th to keep the wrecks off the track.

Applied to this years competition....

The 10 after Richmond (Race 26) would have been

1)Kenseth
2)Earnhardt Jr
3)Harvick
4)Johnson
5)J Gordon
6)Newman
7)B Labonte
8)Busch
9)T Labonte
10)Waltrip

After 7 races (Atlanta) it would have been:

J Gordon (1111)
Newman (-37)
Johnson (-62)
Harvick (-118)
Earnhardt Jr (-137)
Kenseth (-297)
B Labonte (-319)
T Labonte (-354)
Waltrip (-503)
Busch (-503)

Doing the math and I'll be back with more.

After 8 (Phoenix)

J Gordon ( 1257 )
Newman ( - 13 )
Johnson ( - 33 )
Earnhardt Jr ( - 103 )
Harvick ( - 203 )
Kenseth ( - 293 )
B labonte ( - 410 )
T Labonte ( - 427 )
Busch ( - 479 )
Waltrip ( - 494 )

After 9 races (the Rock)

Johnson ( 1399 )
Newman ( - 5 )
J Gordon ( - 45 )
Earnhardt Jr ( - 121 )
Harvick ( - 227 )
Kenseth ( - 275 )
B Labonte ( - 410 )
T Labonte ( - 442 )
Busch ( - 509 )
Waltrip ( - 584 )

And the final standings would be:

Johnson ( 1569 )
J Gordon ( - 55 )
Newman ( - 123 )
Earnhardt Jr ( - 200 )
Harvick ( - 222 )
B Labonte ( - 400 )
Kenseth ( - 411 )
T Labonte ( - 489 )
Busch ( - 624 )
Waltrip ( - 714 )

I heard Jimmy say this and just couldn't stop laughing.

ROTFL
OMG TRL, was he high on KKs? :XXROFL:

Sounds to me like Jimmy wanted some camera time so he could court some sponsors. Wonder if he's contacted Everlast Punching Bags?

I sure wouldn't like that system, sure hope it's bull crap.I do think it's wrong when the 2nd place finisher,by leading the most laps, gets awarded 18 points, while the winner of that same race gets 180 points also, the only difference being the amount of the prize money, but no difference in the Title chase.I think aout 10 more points would be about right for the winner, also would like to see the pole winner get 5 points,as most drivers finish Their careers with more wins than poles then pole positions should be rewarded with more than the great track position and choice pit-stall selection,as how often do We see the pole-sitter have trouble early on,sometimes never leading a lap even,or They just get shuffled way back in the field after some kind of a problem as in this case all that great track position at the start of the race is gone, just the pit-stall advantage is left to those teams, but with 5 points awarded They'd still have something to show for all of that team's hard work at getting the pole,JMO ;)

i sorta like jimmy's points idea, but im not sure that it would be the best idea. I think that they need to restructure the way the points are awarded.

Currently, this is how top ten are awarded points:

1st place: 175, 2nd place: 170, points 3rd place: 165, points 4th: 160, points 5th: 155, points 6th: 150, points 7th: 146 points, 8th place: 142 points, 9th place: 138 points, 10th place: 134 points.

I think that there needs to be more sepperation between the whole top 10, so drivers will try harder not only going for the win, but for 3rd instead of settling with 4th.

In my plan:
1st place: 205, 2nd place: 195, points 3rd place: 184, points 4th: 176, points 5th: 168, points 6th: 160, points 7th: 152 points, 8th place: 146 points, 9th place: 140 points, 10th place: 134 points.
I'm not sure about getting points for the pole. If there was going to be points awarded during qualifying, it should be for the entire front row. maybe 6 for the pole and 3 for the outside pole.

Where were all these people with all their ideas when Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt were running away with things? But as soon as a Ford wins it comfortably, it's time to rework a system that's been dandy for 30-something years.

Bunch of crybabies if you ask me. And I'm not just singling you out, yours just happened to be the post that broke this camel's back.

After watching the tight battle in the CTS and BGN, I see no reason to change the points system.

There have been larger point spreads in the past. It's running consistently that wins the Cup.

For Anyone that says the current point system is fine, tell Me this,is it fine for the 2nd place finisher to be able to get 180 points,by leading the most laps, while the winner also gets 180 points? This is not much of a victory IMHO. ;)

btw,My posts here are from My observations in the past few years,as I've only been a fan since mid-1998,not just this year because of the #17's great season,They won it fair and square and They deserve it all,it;s not My intention to detract from that team's success at all.
I just never cared to see the 2nd place finisher,in some races, get the same amount of points as the winner,JMO

forgot to mention that i liked the points the way they are now. I meant to say in my post that if they were goint to redo the points, i think thats the way they should do it.

I think the most important thing to do is get rid of the running wrecks that only seem to cause more wrecks as the race goes on. I think the guys that get wrecked out should have an arm wrestling or hot dog eating contest after the race is over to decide where they finish. At least that way, you won't have half a car out there just waiting for tragedy. Look at it this way, if you have a race horse, and he loses a leg, you don't keep him on the track to race with the other horses, you just take the loss man.

For my opinion on all of this, simply read the quote at the bottom of my signature.

IMHO, the points system has already been argued almost to death. Let it be! Consistancy pays off in the long run.

Strides, GREAT sig!
