The engine manufacturer re-entered F1 in 2000 with Williams with a deal set to run out at the end of 2004. BMW boss Mario Theissen has said that this could be the ideal time to move into a full works team, like that of Toyota.
"What we want to have in the long term future is maximum success," said Theissen. "We will talk about the long-term future after the season, and we have an agreement that we should come to a decision jointly by the end of the year."
BMW had tried to buy shares in the Williams team when they first began their engine supply, with a similar arrangement to that of McLaren and Mercedes, where parent company DaimlerChrysler own a percentage of the team. Williams rejected this idea, leacing their team in the hands of Frank Williams and Patrick Head.
