  • Bobby Labonte suffers broken ribs: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Bobby Labonte is currently being treated at a local hospital near his home in Trinity, North Carolina after being involved in an accident while riding his bicycle near his home on the morning of Wednesday, August 28. Labonte was transported to the hospital by ambulance where he was diagnosed and is being treated for three broken ribs. There are no other injuries. He is being held overnight for observation. An update on Labonte's condition will be sent when determined. Mike Bliss will replace Labonte in the #51 Phoenix Racing entry this weekend in Atlanta.(Breaking Limits)(8-28-2013)

I am sad, I really wanted to see him in the 51 at Atlanta. I really thought he'd have a good chance at a top 15 in that car.

Man this year has been tough on NASCAR drivers.

Get well soon Bobby!

With that said, who else thinks this is just what they have been waiting for to let Bobby down easy?

Depending on the injury and how long it takes for him to get back he may not find a ride after this.

I am guessing if he wanted to he could race this weekend, but being in his situation, why? My guess is since he is not in any championship/sponsorship situation there is no need for him to be in discomfort just to race a car. So I am sure when ever he feels up to it he can jump right back into a car.

I have had three broken ribs forward on my left side and strapped into a nascar race car Is the very last place I would have wanted to be for about three months but maybe that's just me.

No I agree, I was just saying if this was Edwards, Johnson, ect...I bet they would be in that race car this weekend. With Bobby he has nothing to lose, so sitting out isn't that big a deal for him, but when he is comfortable he should be able to get in and drive.

Umm I dont think its as simple as just getting into a ride and drive.

If say he's out of commision for about a month, he loses his spot depending on how that other driver is doing.

There are many drivers without a ride right now and not many cars to go around. When a spot opens up you better be there to take it otherwise you'll lose out and be without a ride for a long time.

He still has a contract with JTG doesn't he? Say if in two weeks he feels up to it, he can get back in that car. That is what I meant. I am not saying that when he is ready he can just call up any car owner and driver whatever car he wants. Just going back to my original point. Broken ribs won't exactly put him out for the rest of the year.

That sucks, hopefully he makes a full and quick recovery.

Sure has been a bunch of injuries this year, anyone remember this many in a season?

me too.
plus at his age......old bones don't heal up as fast as young ones.
he's a tuff guy......return will prolly depend on fracture severity.

No respect.

There wasn't a car involved I guess? just fell over?
Didn't think it was funny either....

They never mentioned hitting a vehicle....pretty poor reporting but he must have fallen by himself.
