I nominate Michael McDowell for bonehead of the year.

Took his little grudge with Gilliland and wrecked 9 cars and hurting a driver. NASCAR should've parked him for that.

I was shocked that hornish kept going. From the turn 11 view, i thought that car would be trashed. CoT did it's job.

I ominate nascar for not throwing a yellow for newman till after 6 cars tried to not hit him.

Here's what I've got so far.

Bonehead at The Glen?

1. Michael McDowell: intentionally wrecking Gilliland triggering a dangeous 9 car accident.
2. NASCAR for not throwing the caution soon enough when Newman spun and stalled.
3. Tony Eury Jr, Dale Earnhardt Jr. basically giving the race away by staying out.
4. Tony Eury: whining about this being a fuel mileage race

(did he forget Michigan?)

1. McDowell, for obvious reasons
2. NASCAR, for the sleepy yellow
3. Eury Jr. for hosing his cousin out of a better finish

I thought it was funny when Eury Jr. whined about "a cupful of dirt" on the track when there was obviously a huge amount of large caliber gravel on the track. It doesn't take much to poke a hole in these rice paper Goodyears. Jimmie barely got off the track and cut a tire.

I loved how he said it was a shame it came down to fuel mileage and that it was a pathetic race. :XXROFL:

Short memory there, Tony? ;)

well they said earlier mcdowell was trying to impress a team to hire him for 09 i think what he did today may of just be the finale reason he will be sitting on the sidelines come next febuary.

I'll give a tie to Eury and McDowell. Eury probably cost Junior the race. I really wonder how long Hendrick will put up with this.

Look at Jeff Gordon's crew cheif. Will most of the time make good calls, tell the last pit stop and will make a very bad call. The best crew cheif is with the 48. The rest with HMS are good, but Don't seem to preform under presser like they should.

BTW: i just seen one-2 replays of the wreck. I turned the tv on and the red flag was out, and had been for 10 or so mins, but i fell a sleep before they even started their motors back. So i can't do a bonehead or rate it.

According to the announcer's, there was stuff happening between McDowel and Gilliland on the back stretch, with out knowing what transpired there, I had to take them out of the equation.

By far the biggest Knuckle head was Tony Jr., I'm no Jr. fan, but for cryin' out loud, Lil E certainly deserves better then that. His strategy before the yellow was going to cost him the win, he was a second off the pace!!! And numbnutz leaves he out AND gets caught in a yellow. Freakin' brilliant!!

Well, at least you know where I stand!! LOL Yaa Kyle!!

I can't. They might of gotten into it earlier (racing incident) but McDowell intended to wreck Gilliland. I'm sure he didn't want a big crash like we got, but that's always the risk when you take your temper and use your racecar as a weapon.

NASCAR doesn't like intentional wrecking because this is what can happen. McDowell/Gilliland was a textbook definition of what can happen and I hope NASCAR plays that video of that wreck at the Driver's Meetings every race to remind drivers what can happen when they decide to intentionally wreck someone.

Gilliland didn't wreck 9 cars and hurt a driver. McDowell's actions did, and this is exactly what can happen.

Eury's a bonehead.

Agreed. How long will Hendrick keep a guy like Darian Grubb as a car chief when the crew chiefs of the 24 and 88 continue to make dumb calls week after week?

When i saw what happened i was like thats a mess and McDowell needs an ass woopin. But when i saw bobby get out of the car and was obviously in pain well damnit i was seeing red I was so pissed because that was a wreck that was definitly avoidable.

and unfortunately McDowell wont have to sit on the side lines from racing next year because he will not have a hard time getting a ride in ARCA again. The other drivers dont really like him there either, but he is good for going for the championship in the series.

I don't think McDowell can succeed in ARCA in this year's level of competition. ARCA, today, is the most competitive form of stock car racing; and the races have been amazing!

All I know is Tony Eury Jr is my hero. I bestow hero status to anyone who screws Lil'E over the way he did.

Mike Skinner is listed in the Michigan entry list as the driver of the #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota field by Michael Waltrip Racing, no word on what is up with regular driver Michael McDowell. ~ Jayski

UPDATE 2: Michael McDowell said he supports Michael Waltrip Racing's decision to replace him with Mike Skinner in the 3M Performance 400 this weekend at Michigan. McDowell, whose #00 team is currently outside the top 35 in owner points, said in a statement that he's in favor of doing "whatever it takes to improve the performance of our team. No driver wants to get out of the car, but I understand that every part of our program needs to be evaluated, and that certainly includes me. I plan to support Mike Skinner and our team any way I can, and hopefully learn some things that will help when I get back in the car."(SceneDaily)(8-12-2008)

sure would be funny if mike outperformed mikey and david both

How long did the Skin man drive with the Lowe's colors and not win? But you say wait, that was not a Hendricks car. Oh but it was the teammate of the mighty Dale Earnhardt the Senior. It wasn't until that rascally Robby Gordon took over that ride before Lowe's got their first win. There is one thing I will say about Mikey Waltrip and that is he has more wins in a Cup car than does Mike Skinner.

Mikey says the wreck was not the fault of McDowel, it was a payback move by Gilliland. Duane

but Buckaroo, didn't Skinner win over in Japan......... not a points race, but still...... and i seem to remember him bein in the top ten in points, even leadin for awhile....... also remember at Daytona him leadin near the end, only to be moved by Big E himself. Not a big fan of Skinner, but give the guy a bit of credit...... after Larry Mac left the team, it was down hill from there, then onto second rate teams......... just sayin.......

Yeah, yer right, but there had to be something in him that any of the big name owners just didn't like. Or could it have been his image? He looks more like those "good old boys" of old and things were a changin in NASCAR and their sponsors. Mike is like so many others who have come and gone since him. For some reason, the truck series just fits him better though I know he'd rather be in a Cup car. Musgrave, Hornaday, Bodine...the list goes on and on. When you look at some of the younger guys in Cup, you wonder why they are in those cars instead of the proven drivers that are winning in the truck series. Why didn't Johnny Benson win in a Cup car? It's like the Peter Principle, once you reach your best ability, you can't go any further.
