UPDATE 2 - PENALTIES: NASCAR has issued penalties, fines and suspensions to the car #1 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions found last week at Daytona International Speedway. The car driven by Martin Truex Jr., was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-3.8A (roof of the car does not conform to the specifications) of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rule book. As a result, Truex Jr. and car owner Teresa Earnhardt have been penalized 150 championship driver and 150 championship owner points, respectively. Both the crew chief, Kevin Manion, and the car chief, Gary Putnam, have been suspended from the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until Aug. 27 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Additionally, Manion has been fined $100,000. The infractions were discovered July 3 during opening day inspection.(NASCAR PR), the penalty moves Truex from 14th in drivers pts, -88 out of the Chase to 18th in drivers points, 238 points out of the Chase. Statement from Dale Earnhardt Inc. Regarding #1 Team Fine: Following NASCAR's announcement that it has fined the Dale Earnhardt Inc. #1 car 150 car owner points, 150 driver points and issued a $100,000 fine for crew chief Kevin Manion, as well as a six-race suspension for Manion and car chief Gary Putnam, Dale Earnhardt Inc. vice president of motorsports operations John Story issued the following statement: "We are still trying to understand how the car fit our templates multiple times at the shop, but we respect NASCAR's determination that one of our cars did not exactly conform to their template at the track. We have not decided if we will pursue our options to appeal. Under NASCAR's rules, we have 10 days to notify the sanctioning body of any appeal."(DEI PR)(7-8-2008)

Well that pretty much kills Martin's chase chances. I really think he will be with another team next year.

im waiting for people to get disgusted with nascar and there bs like this and tell them to shove it.

Metal expands and contracts. So it could fit at the shop and not at the track. I dont know how NASCAR checks the cars, but if the shop is say 75* F, then NASCAR needs to check the cars in the same cond.

NASCAR did say there was now gray area, but some of this is getting out of line.

What I dont understand, if the car didnt even make it thru "FIRST" tech, why weren't they allowed to make the changes and roll thru again at teh end of the line. THEN and only then, if it still wasn't right, do what ya got to do??? Around here, once teched, if something is wrong, you have till the begining of your race to make it right (however it's dirt) but the rule is stuck o everyone, no if's, and's or "butt's" about it... You don't pass it, you don't play it...

And yea basscatcher89, not to sure if many haven't thought of that allready.... Hell, ARCA needs some good names back in it LMAO

I imagine it would have to be pretty serious for NASCAR to impound their car.

I wouldn't be so quick to bash NASCAR and take Truex's side on this yet, Truex does have an appeal and if what you guys say is the case happens to be, it could get overturned.

But, we don't know that they didn't deliberately do anything at this point, judging by the fine and actions of NASCAR, it appears they did.

From what I understand the team was given time to fix the problem at the track. They worked on it, but the grid still didn't fit.

And there are some allowable tolerances.

DEI to Appeal #1 Team Penalties: Dale Earnhardt Inc. is appealing at least the suspensions of #1 team crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion and car chief Gary Putnam. Manion and Putnam were working in the garage at Chicagoland Speedway today, and suspended personnel are not allowed at the track unless their penalty is being appealed. DEI Vice President John Story confirmed Thursday afternoon that the team will appeal. The appeal will be heard July 21. “We’ve been granted an opportunity for appeal and anything we have to say about the appeal will be done during the hearing we’ve been granted,” said Story, who would not elaborate on the scope and basis for the appeal.(SceneDaily.com)(7-10-08)

even though only 1 person has made it out of an appeal with a win (that i rmemeber of, forget who). They're just buying time for the CC's to be on the war wagon.
