The "good old days" ??
I’ve been reading Brad’s views on Danica coming to NASCAR. See what you think….
Brad Keselowski
Interesting hearing/seeing reaction from friends, family & fans about Danica announcement. u can really read a lot into the sport's percep. Most knowledgable female friends, family & fans are not happy about it. Casual female friends, family and fans, intrigued by her. What does it say about her decision when those who know the sport and have faced similar challenges accordingly, r against her?
Brad then selects these fan Tweets to retweet from his account and support his opinions.

@keselowski What does it say about the sport when she can walk right in based on who she is, and not on her career... #kindaunfair

"Lots of questions on my view about Danica. So I'll answer them once and for all, now, right here on twitter. One and only time. Growing up racing against girls in quarter midgets, I have no problem with females racing. the sport has always been about mental strength, And raw talent. Not gender, or freak of nature genetics. Btw, Some of the best racers I competed against as a kid were girls. Although I never raced against Danica growing up I'm sure she was one of those exceptionally talented and skilled girls. Watching some of those girls flame out along the way was always disheartening for me personally. As a competitor u what to race the best. Their were many reasons the talented girls didn't make it along the way. Some didn't like the label, of female race car driver. Others, Wanted time for a boy friend & later family. Kudos to Danica for sticking it out. Most don't. I'll always respect her accordingly. All that said, her assent up the ladder of the sport thru various branding 'techniques' (swimsuit ads etc) only serves to undermine the Future credibility of female racers who wish to make it based on skill, mental toughness and a never give up attitude. That to me is wrong. Essentially she has opened a pandoras box for all female racers. If she doesn't succeed, no female will get a chance for years to come."
My take:
It’s one thing to be an ‘old school’ racer, entirely another to be a caveman. You have to go back a few decades to find a prevalent attitude that women should be pretty OR successful, but not both. MOST in todays society can judge Danica on her driving skill AND appreciate her sex appeal. Danica certainly paid her due coming up through the lower series to get a ride in Indy cars. If men saw fit to make that journey a little easier because sex sell’s, so be it. I think that the GoDaddy ads go a bit too far are their whole campaign seem’s to be based on boobs and legs. The facts is, they have increased their share of the world wide web hosting industry 300% since going that route.
It’s short sighted to think if Danica fails at NASCAR, she will keep any female driver from getting a chance “for years to come”. To expouse such a narrow view of women racers is a pretty sad opinion coming from such a young man. It’s one thing to be an ‘old school’ racer, entirely another to be a caveman. Kevin Conway stepped in front of more deserving drivers and got a ride because he had a sponsor. Kevin hasn’t been as successful as Danica. Has he killed opportunities for future male drivers “for years to come”? Certainly not, because MOST people judge a driver on his or her skill, not the skill of some other failed driver who happens to be the same sex. Carl Edwards certainly benefits from his sex appeal, and he plays the game. Has that hurt the sport? What about those Kasey Kahne cougar commercials? Did Danica and GoDaddy hurt womens chances in Indy car? I don’t think so, because she is leaving a sport that has had MORE women drivers since her arrival.
I also find it disingenuous for Brad to cherry pick his retweets because it was from a female who doesn’t like Danica coming to NASCAR. I know for a fact that he received many tweets in support of her (I sent a bunch, and his timeline shows others), but he chose not to share many of those. Even IF most tweets were against Danica getting a NW ride, it doesn’t give a short sighted opinion much validity.
Brad, let’s get back to reality. NASCAR is now a sponsor driven endeavor. That’s reality for boys and girls alike. When Danica arrives in the Nationwide series, the ratings and attendance will boom, and some of those sponsor-less female drivers may get their own sponsor. Danica spent last year seeing if she could actually drive a stockcar, and she has proven that to even the most cynical and informed race fan.
Brad, I’m a long time fan of yours and appreciate your willingness to give your honest opinion, but you should consider a cold reboot on this issue. Give race fans and society a bit more credit than you seem to.
P.S. I’m not a Danica fan….at all. It’s not her fault though. NASCAR see’s $’s and has been relentless cultivating this cash cow. Not that she’s a cow in the old school sense.
