Jeremy Mayfield forming his own Cup team

RacingForTheWin.com has learned 5-time Sprint Cup Series race winner Jeremy Mayfield is forming his own Cup operation, out of pocket, so he can attempt to run the full Sprint Cup Series schedule. He has reportedly begun hiring staff and has already reportedly purchased four Toyota chasis.
 
I guess he didn't consult Ricky Rudd or DW on this. Actually, this would be a good time to do this since it's not certain there will be a full field of car for every race.

Agreed. If he has 4 cars and is going full-time, he's already better placed than most teams. Remember, with the COT, you don't need different cars for different tracks like you do in Nationwide or ARCA.
 
wonder how long that's gona last, as you all know i'm not (to put it mildy) a Mayfly fan. if he can't win with a highly funded team (everham) what makes him think he can on his own
 
Hell, he might just be a start-n-park team. Probably could make money that way...
 
Wish him well but he's got some difficult, and expensive, days ahead.
 
Here's how I look at it.

Jeremy has capital. I doubt he had to do too terribly much to get a basic team and the 4 chassis. We're guaranteed to have almos short fields, so he has a good chance to make shows. Last place pays roughly 1.3 Mil i think, so he can pay things off fairly quick even start/parking.
 
If he gets his stuff

together, I'll pull for him every week. I'd love to see a new one car team get up there in the top ten every week.

I think it would be funnier when Morgan Shepard bumps him from the field during qualifying.
