Labonte will drive No. 96 for Hall of Fame in 2009

Bobby Labonte will drive the No. 96 Ford in 2009, three sources told NASCAR.COM on Tuesday evening.

A formal announcement is to be made Wednesday, according to the sources, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The 2000 Cup Series champion, Labonte will drive for Hall of Fame Racing, which announced an alignment with Yates Racing on Tuesday. (read more)

Labonte was released from his contract with Petty Enterprises last month. He was driver of the famed No. 43 car for three seasons.

Hall of Fame Racing, formed by former NFL quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, made its NASCAR debut in the 2006 Daytona 500. Two-time Cup Series champion Terry Labonte finished 17th in that race. Labonte and Tony Raines shared the car in 2006, with Raines taking over full-time in '07.

I'm speechless in a not so good way. I dunno. I shook my head severely three years ago. This time I think my head will fall from my neck if I shake it anymore. The only saving grace is that HOF is now aligned with Yates racing. I was starting to wrap my head around the idea of the #8, thinking that would have been a decent deal. Now, I dunno. I dunno.

As a Bobby Labonte fan im dissapointed. I was thinking he was headed to EGR, but i think HOF/Yates Racing needed a former champion because they where outside of the top 35 in owners points.

The problem i have with the 96 is after last year they went through about 5 drivers and none of them did well at all. Even Joey Lagono who everyone was ecpecting to turn the team around couldnt help so i dont see much hope for this team other than it being a regular car and not a field filler :( .

Yeah, Im not to sure about this move. Of course, the way these scenarios are playing out, this may not come true.;)

I dont like it one bit......I'm disappointed as I too was thinkin' the 8 would be OK

I'm not even trying to stay on top of the EGR changes.

I think I'll just wait and see who climbs in to what car at the big dance in February.

First thing I've been shocked about with NASCAR in a long time. Bobby signing with HOF racing was so far out in left field I didn't even give it a consideration. With yates engines he should place a solid 15-20 in points position. Not what I'd want for Bobby.

It amazes me that drivers like Labonte are relegated to low-rate teams and drivers like Allmendinger are forced to part-time schedules while Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler, Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard still have full-time rides.

Then you don't understand how the real world works...

Anyone find it interesting that Bobby was replaced in the 18 by JJ Yeley and that the last full time driver in the 96 Was JJ? Or that when Dale Jarrett left the 18, he went to Yates and that Labonte is going to what is essentially a Yates team? Okay, Guess I'm thinking too much......

I am now better with the idea of Bobby driving the 96. The man aint stupid. With Yates power, Roush Chassis and all that talent, the 96 has no choice but to rise to the top. This deal is much better than the Petty arrangement because the suppliers were not at the top of their game. The 96's past drivers were not high on the talent chain, lets face it. Where's Tony Raines? Where's JJ Yeley? Sure, Sliced Bread didn't do as well as expected, but hey, the kids 18 years old and the car wasn't set up properly. We all know that the Gibbs teams don't share well. The fact that the 96 will be in the same house as the other Yates teams bodes well for success. I'm pumped now!!!!!!!!!!!!
