The Rockingham Speedway, which hosted NASCAR Sprint Cup races from 1965-2004, is taking a huge step toward once again hosting big-league racing as SAFER "soft wall" barriers will be installed next month.

The energy-absorbing system will be installed in two phases, in mid-September and late December, covering all four turns of the one-mile oval and the inside of the backstretch wall.

The most common estimate of the SAFER barrier cost is $1 million per mile. "Yes, that's expensive," said Robert Ingraham, the track's general manager, "but nothing's more expensive than having someone hurt."

Very good move even if Nascar doesn't come back here its good to have them anyway, but I do hope to maybe see a truck, nationwide, or even cup race here again.

I don't think Hillenburg would throw the money in to it if NASCAR wasn't going there. I know they've been talking about it for a while so I don't think it's a reaction to Brad Keselowski's crash.

We shall see when the schedules come out though.

i know it is in the middle of nowhere and that wouldn't appeal to the fans of today but the Rock hosted some great racing in the past much better that what Kansas, chicago, Cali, indy (should i go on ) have to offer

If all the fans who have promised to show up don't show, I will scream!

The second the headline reads "NASCAR Returning to The Rock", the request for credentials is going out.

I'll be staying in Pinebluff or Southern Pines this time... **** Wadesboro.

No way I can justify towing my 5er down there for a standalone Nationwide/Truck weekend. Throw in Cup though and I'll be there.

It's farther for you than me, but I drove eight hours for an ARCA race. Stayed in Wadesboro. HATED that drive, didn't catch a single red light the whole way down when I really wanted one. That drive brought to you by Red Bull.

The time doesn't bother me, its the $. We already do 5 or more Cup weekends and that's too many $ wise.

Like has been said they wouldn't spend the money if they didn't know something was coming. I doubt it will be Cup but a truck or Nationwide race would be cool.

Looking forward to a NCWTS or NNS race there - on tv. That's too far for me to go.

But, I'll get to Daytona someday.

Okay, here it goes, a lot to digest here.

Rockingham Speedway will host a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series date next Spring -- the deal will be finalized in the next few days.

Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis will host a NCWTS/ARCA/USAC tripleheader on the week of the Brickyard 400, IF NASCAR gives them a Nationwide date the week before the Brickyard 400.

Mobile International Speedway in Alabama will expand their capacity to 18,000 if an agreement is reached to bring the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series there.

I'm certainly not against that, but it seems like a lot to ask for.

Read FenderBumper's post. I agree with him, there's no way Hillenburg invests the money in to SAFER barriers if he didn't have a written commitment in hand from NASCAR.

Rockingham makes A Ton of money leaseing the tracks for testing ( a ton is required to keep the track in the black ) not only to Cup teams but many other racing teams, it's what keeps the track Alive.
If the testing teams OUR their Insurer's said they wanted safer barriers there Andy would invest in them.

I HOPE thats not the case and that we will be seeing NASCAR at The Rock :beerbang:

SIRIUS Speedway sources stating that a truck race is in the future for Rockingham, Nationwide, probably not. Andy Hillenburg to be on SIRIUS Speedway later this afternoon.

I hope their sources are wrong about the Nationwide race.

So do I. A Truck race isn't worth the haul unless they throw in ARCA or UARA to accompany it.

Much much better racing. I bet with the drivers of today, there will be a lot of whining going on when they loose grip on new tires within 2 laps. What a great track, Low going into 1 and 2, about to plow down the exit to turn two fence, and riding hide wide and handsome into turn 3 and 4 all while fighting the sandy asphalt tire grater. Kyle Busch will run well there, need good car control to manuever around that 1 miler.

You brought up something I had'nt thought about, it would be Very Interesting to see some of the newer Hotshots slip and slide their rides around the Rock. Look at how many of the current crop have Never been there :D
With Busch's corner speed and car control he'd definately be a contender.....if he did'nt stick it anyway.

Rockingham Speedway has begun installing SAFER barrier along inside backstretch wall. SAFER barriers to be added in turns later. First phase expected to be done by Nov. 5.
