how's life without 'dinger working out for you? :XXROFL:

Red Bull faces heavy fines for shaving weight: NASCAR is expected to levy what could be record-breaking fines on the #83 Team Red Bull Toyota outfit on Wednesday. After Brian Vickers finished 11th at the Tums QuikPak 500 at Martinsville Speedway, the #83 Toyota was selected as the random car to be further inspected at the NASCAR Technical Center in Concord, N.C., where officials discovered the sheet metal on the #83 car did not meet the minimum thickness requirements. According to sources familiar with the situation, the sides of the car — the doors, fenders and quarter panels — were too thin. The NASCAR rulebook states in rule 20-2, 1D that teams must use a minimum of 24 gauge (0.025 inch thick) sheet steel for their car bodies. Also, the practice of "Acid dipping or chemical milling," which makes the sheet metal thinner, is strictly forbidden. One individual close to the situation said acid dipping would allow a fabricator to make the metal thinner. Once the steel is sanded and painted, it is nearly impossible for NASCAR to detect. Something wrong here. 24 gauge is .0239 thick, 25 gauge is .0209. 24 gauge is closer to the .025 thickness required.

There's also manufacturing tolerances to take into consideration. No piece of sheet metal is exactly .025 thick nor it it's thickness consistent over the entire sheet.

Not defending/attacking anyone, just pointing out a inconsisitency.

NASCAR, inconsistent? Say it ain't so.

It was pointed out about the acid dipping. They must have reason to believe to think that was done. If it was, that's blatant cheating.

BOOM!!!! Here comes the boom!!!

When will they learn? You cannot win with NASCAR. They will pull you, take points from you and take your car.

My friends, NASCAR done just made a point.

The car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-2.1-D (exterior sheet metal body parts did not meet the specified minimum thickness) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book.

As a result, both the crew chief, Kevin Hamlin, and the car chief, Craig Smokstad, have been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR. Additionally, Hamlin has been fined $100,000.

Driver Brian Vickers and owner Dietrich Mateschitz have been penalized with the loss of 150 driver and 150 owner points, respectively.

That's right, they made the point that the rules are X and if you break those rules you will be penalized Y. This penalty is not out of line from what they have done to others who have intentionally tried to skirt the rules for the COT.
But, then if this were Jimmie or someone else these same people crying over Vickers would be saying that Jimmie and Knaus should be taken out back and shot. That is the point I see being made week after week...

bp, I agree with the penalty here.

As far as you saying "if this were Jimmie," Johnson's crew chief has a long history of trying to skirt the rules and he was never suspended indefinitely.

But, NASCAR's been consistent here. That was 2 years ago, this is now. And, with the cases where they have handed down indefinite suspensions, the attempts to get around the rules have been extremely blatant. There's no doubt whatsoever in this case and the Joe Gibbs Racing deal that the teams went out of their way to skirt the rulebook and that those attempts go back to the fab shop. NASCAR, I'm sure, has a reason to believe they were acid dripping as the articles state. I know SST said it's hard to be exact, but they take a car to R&D every week and check this stuff and every week, the other guys survive the inspection process. Nobody can deny Red Bull Racing was cheating here.

There has never been nor will there ever be a race car that's 100% legal.

Rule #1) Always let the tech guy find a violation, when visiting a track let them find a minimum of 2. It makes them feel wanted and loved.

Rule #2) At the completion of the event roll around high picking up "all the marbles" you can. It'll help should you be checked for ride height.

Rule #3) Should you have accidently parked your race car in a puddle of "Fast Lap" prior to making a qualifying don't have your driver drive thru gravel. DAMHIKT:p

Or do like Waltrip did and blow the engine after crossing the finish line so it makes tech inspection a little harder.

LOL.

who was it that backed their car into the wall while doing burnouts to aid the inspection process?

Show me a front runner ill show you a cheater.

works except for mikes case lol
