RICHMOND, Va. -- Feeling the heat of a race for the NASCAR Busch Series championship that has a 79-point spread from first to fifth, Brewco Motorsports and its driver, David Green, have opted for engines from Dale Earnhardt Incorporated.

The Brewco team's second try of DEI power this season will be in Friday night's Funai 250 at Richmond International Raceway. Brewco sampled DEI power at Michigan last month and Green finished fourth.

Despite winning twice already this season and being only 19 points behind leader Scott Riggs, Green said he and team owner Clarence Brewer wanted to be sure they made every effort for Green to win his second series championship, which would be the first for Brewco.

"It was a five-man race a couple or three weeks ago," Green said last weekend at Darlington Raceway, where all four drivers closest to the lead shaved points off Riggs' lead. "It wasn't time to get excited then and it still isn't.

"We're soon going to a lot of places that have the capability of swinging it (point differential) big-time. I don't think anybody gave us a prayer when we started and we're digging hard.

"We've gotten this far and we're not giving up now."

Green is concerned about ppc Racing's two-car effort of Riggs and fourth place Jason Keller, who is 70 points out of the lead.

Looming even larger, Green said, is 19-year-old Hendrick Motorsports dynamo Brian Vickers, who won at Darlington for his second victory of the season to jump into third, 67 points out.

"The points are too valuable and Brian (Vickers) is going to be tough," Green said. "I look at this whole deal like Hendrick Motorsports is Superman and we're Mighty Mouse -- not because of heart or 'want-to,' but small in size (of the team) compared to Hendrick's.

"When it's all said and done he's going to know we're there. We might win and we might come up short, but he's the guy (Vickers) that we've got to keep our eye on."

Green's two victories came with engines from Bill Davis Racing.

DEI's engine department is already responsible for four Busch Series victories this season: Three (in three starts) by Chance 2 Motorsports co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. and another by Busch owner/driver Michael Waltrip.

Green said Brewco would not totally abandon its BDR connection.

"Bill (Davis) is still going to do some of our motors," Green said. "But we feel like to upgrade our program that was one area (DEI engines) we had to go toward, because it's a never-ending struggle working on your cars."

I hope this works out for David. I'm a little bit nervous about the switch because it seemed like the BDR engines were just fine. They do have some tracks coming up where the extra hp will come in handy.
