Hey everyone I am hoping to be able to get to go to Bristol in August. It would be my first time going to Bristol. Can anyone please give me any info about the experience, stories, or camping information? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

We'll be heading up that way in August as well, but the racing we're going to see is the modifieds from both the north and south and also on the same day will be the truck race. Those races will be on Wednesday and then we'll be on our way back home. Good luck with your trip. Gonna camp out?

I go in Mar and Aug. Be prepared for ANY kind of weather. It's been hot (93 degrees) and cold (snow) in March and hot and cool in Aug. Watch the weather reports. Get there early to avoid traffic and get good parking. Parking on Whitetop Rd is FREE and there are FREE shuttle buses that take you to/from the track. Get there early to see q'fying, practices, etc. The NW race is usually pretty good, so we go to that, too. I've never camped, so maybe someone else can help you with that.

Buck I'm thinking about going down there for the Mod and Truck race. Did i read it correctly that tickets are just $30 both races?

That's right...30 bucks for both of them, general admission. Let me know if you are coming and we can find a way to get together for some chat.

Working out the details in the next few weeks, going to drive down, been by the track on my way up from SanAntonio a few years back, so I know the area little. Just have to find a good place to stay overnight that won't break the bank.

Andy, keep this in mind when asking if I/WE are going anywhere, if it isn't a modified race, the answer is no. I've seen all the Cup racing in person that I care to and the wife is not into anything other than Cup and our modifieds. So, other than a modifed race, the only race you will be able to catch me at if I can ever find a pardner to attend with me is the annual late model big race at Martinsville.

But seriously, I'd love to catch one of the races down there at the Rock, but it just isn't in the cards for me.

Camping at Bristol is very expensive. If is according to which grandstand you are in as to which campground is the best. Personally I like like the Earhardt Campground across the highway from the front entrance of the Speedway.

Any decent cheap motels within say 20 minutes of the track?

for the fall race you might find a cheep hotel in Nashville

good luck finding ANY hotel within 20 min of the track i know most are sold out years in advance (just like the race) you might (and that is a BIG might) be able to get a room at a reasonable rate in Newport about 90 miles away. you could probably camp at Davey Crockett camp ground in Limestone reasonably and that is about 45 -50 miles away

sorry for the bad news but we have friends that have stayed as far away as Asheville NC

There are some motels in Greenville that might have some rooms if you call right now.

don't think so K, i have freinds that are lookin. the only one that might is the general morgan and it's not cheap i know the company i work for gets a block of 25 there for the races

We found a room at the Ramada in Johnson City for the mod and truck race. With the way they are advertising tickets for that weeks racing, I'd bet you can find a room much easier than in the past.

Several years back we decided we would just stay in a motel instead of driving the 45 minutes back and forth. I called one of the 800 numbers for reservations and they tried to send me to Boone NC. I told them thanks but I lived closer than that.

Hey, in the past I've known people from here that have said it was just as quick going to the track form downtown Winston Salem as it was from the places many have been able to find.

Some years ago, we booked a couple of races with a touring company out of Charlotte and we enjoyed the bus ride to and from the track and what a relief it was from driving. That company will still do the driving and get the tickets as well and they will take you to the track and get your closer than if you drove and found your own parking space. I tell you that is a much better deal in many cases and Bristol would be one of them if I were to decide to take in a cup race there.

We signed up to take a tour with Christian Tours to Pocono a few years back. Not enough people singed up for it. They gave us our money back but offered to sell us tickets to drive ourselves and I didn't want to do that.

Buck being you are staying all night in Johnson City you might as well take off Thursday and come on down to THE GAP for the Scorcher. It is on Thursday Night.

Looks like the wife will have a hard time taking off time from work for the Mod and truck race. Turns out the other dispatcher /cnr is on vacation that week. Pretty bummed about it, she loves the Trucks, says she can out drive Bodine anyday....lol. We aren't giving up that is for sure, because both of us really want to go. Hopefully we can work out the details, if we do go we will probably hit the road after the race and drive a 100 or so miles then stay at a motel somewhere. It is about a 775 mile trip for us, I love to drive so, piece of cake for me, buddy said no too far. But hopefully I can talk another couple into going. After seeing what these guys posted for speeds in testing....I can't wait!

If you can't make that race, see if you can make the Martinsville race on September 27. It's not nearly as fast, but you know Martinsville, and those guys go crazy on that track. This is one of the races that both the northern tour and the southern tour race together just like at Bristol this year. I can guarantee you that you can get a motel room at Martinsville for that race...and you will probably be in the same motel as some of those Yankee drivers/owners/crew. Hey, we even get a room up there and it's only an hour ride from our home. :)

Hmmm totally forgot about Martinsville, that would be cool. I'll have to see how things are at work by mid-July, I'll have a better idea if I can get time off or not.

And if you can't see that one and you really want to see some great, non-sanctioned all out mods racing, there is always the North/South Shootout at Concord Motorsports Park. There they run the NASCAR mods, SK mods, and Super Modifieds, the winged mods. It's a great two day show with heat races and other series as well. They even run the old flathead Ford mods as well as other antique mods.
