Ford win streak at BMS: Ford carries quite a winning streak into Saturday night's race at Bristol Motor Speedway: Ford has reached Victory Lane at Bristol at least once each year between 1996-2008. #99-Carl Edwards won at Bristol in 2008 and 2007, and one of his teammates, Matt Kenseth, won there in 2006 and 2005.(Ford Racing), #18-Kyle Busch won at Bristol in March, running a Toyota.(8-20-2009)

Terry Labonte heads to Bristol: #08-Terry Labonte is one of 13 "Go or Go Home" drivers on the Bristol Motor Speedway entry list heading into this weekends Sharpie 500. The 1984 and 1996 Champion will be guaranteed a start via the Past Champions Provisional, but the team feels the #08 Toyota is more than capable of making the field on speed. Even with a locked in spot, champion driver and quality crew, the car is missing one thing, sponsorship.(Carter Simo Racing)(8-20-2009)

Man injured at BMS: A Church Hill, Tenn. man is in stable condition after being injured in a bizarre accident at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday night. The Bristol, Tennessee Police Department told 11 Connects that the injured man is Darrell Wayne Mitchell. Police say a red tractor trailer owned by T.S. Haulers, Inc. was exiting the infield area of BMS around 10:43 p.m. Wednesday night, when it struck a platform tower and ladder. They say the ladder shifted and pinned Mitchell into a retaining wall at the speedway. A medical helicopter transported Mitchell to Bristol Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition.(11 Connects)(8-20-2009)

New sponsor for Robby at Bristol: #7-Robby Gordon will carry the colors of Hard Rock Las Vegas in the Shaprie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon also ran a similar scheme in the Nationwide race at Watkins Glen. See images on my #7 Team Schemes page.(8-21-2009)

Chase Stats/Notes heading into Bristol: While much will be made of the fuel situation in #83-Brian Vickers' win at MIS, the real story is Vickers' strong run to Chase contention over the last six races. After a 35th at Loudon, Vickers has ticked off finishes of 7th, 7th, 5th, 6th, 11th and first at MIS. Only #14-Tony Stewart has scored more points over the period. The Chase format was designed to provide opportunities for teams to overcome early season problems and make a playoff run over the last 10 races. That's exactly what Vickers and the #83 team are doing. #5-Mark Martin's late pit stop dropped him to 12th in the Race to the Chase standings, but the recent runs of #39-Ryan Newman, #16-Greg Biffle and #17-Matt Kenseth are putting them in jeopardy of being overtaken by Vickers, #33-Clint Bowyer, #18-Kyle Busch or #00-David Reutimann. #2-Kurt Busch has had the worst run over the last five races, but he still has enough cushion to clinch by Atlanta if he rights the ship at Bristol. Kyle Busch needs a big race at Bristol to back in the thick of the Chase hunt. Coming off a win in the spring at Bristol and six Top 10s in the last seven races at BMS, this is the place for him and the #18 team to get it done. Tony Stewart didn't have a great run, but his 17th at MIS was more than enough to clinch a spot in the 2009 Chase, his fifth appearance in the playoffs in the six-year history of the format.
#24-Jeff Gordon and #48-Jimmie Johnson are the only two drivers who can clinch a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup after the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Any driver with a 391-point lead over 13th place after the race clinches a spot in the 10-race championship battle. Second-place Gordon currently leads 13th by 437 points, Johnson leads by 418. In other words, Gordon can lose 46 points and Johnson can lose 27 points to 13th place and still clinch. Gordon can clinch his spot by finishing sixth or better without leading a lap, seventh leading at least one lap or eighth leading the most laps, regardless of what any other driver does. Johnson needs to finish second or better, third leading a lap or fourth leading the most laps, to clinch. See more stats, year-by-year comparison on my Chase Stats after Michigan page and see my 2009 Chase Rules and News.(8-20-2009)

Update on injured man at BMS: A Bristol Motor Speedway emergency medical technician was seriously injured in a freak accident late Wednesday following the modified series race. Darrell Wayne Mitchell of Church Hill, Tenn., was taken by helicopter to the Bristol Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said he was in the surgical intensive care unit Thursday afternoon. Bristol Tennessee Police Sgt. Greg Brown said Mitchell was leaving the infield on foot near the pit entrance between turns two and three about 10:45 p.m., 30 minutes after the end of the race. At the same time, a tractor-trailer turned left out of the infield and scraped the side of an elevated camera platform. The impact twisted the platform and a steel ladder attached to the unit spun around and pinned Mitchell against the infield retaining wall. Brown said Mitchell suffered a head injury, and possibly a skull fracture. There was one person standing on the platform, which a speedway representative estimated is 12 feet high, when the truck grazed the edge. Police said the man on the platform was not hurt and managed to stay on top. Brown said Mitchell was listed in stable condition late Wednesday, then in critical condition by Thursday morning. Mitchell was a paramedic with Church Hill EMS until several months ago when he went to work for the Church Hill Rescue Squad, director Stanley Arnold said. Mitchell is working at the races on contract through Wellmont Health System, which provides dozens of medical workers for the speedway.(Bristol Herald Courier)(8-21-2009)

Stanley to pay out over $1 million if Sadler/Kahne win at Bristol: Richard Petty Motorsports driver Elliott Sadler and the #19 Stanley Dodge now have a million more reasons to win the Aug. 22 race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Primary sponsor Stanley will make a $1 million donation to Children's Miracle Network if Sadler wins the 500-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the half-mile, high-banked track AND Stanley will donate $500,000 to Children's Miracle Network if Kasey Kahne wins Friday night's race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The incentives are part of the "Racing for a Miracle" program created by Stanley, the Ace Hardware Foundation and Children's Miracle Network. "Racing for a Miracle" is a multi-dimensional program that benefits sick and injured kids by raising funds for the hospitals that provide their care. In addition to the race, Sadler is encouraging Ace Hardware patrons to visit one of the country's 1,100 participating Ace Hardware stores during the month of August to buy a $1 "Racing for a Miracle" icon. All donations benefit a local Children's Miracle Network hospital. Kendrick Cohen, a 12-year-old patient at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, N.C., will attend the Aug. 22 race as part of a helmet design contest that he won. Elliott Sadler will present Cohen the helmet he designed and a second helmet will be auctioned off later in the season with donations benefiting Children's Miracle Network.(RPM)(8-21-2009)

I kind of hope one of them wins. Sadler winning would make his real estate worth more
