We are staying in Asheville tonight and headed to the Sprint Cup race tomorrow. What time should we leave in order to get there in time?

Also looking for parking location recommendations. We have our in-laws with us and walking is ok - so long as it's not increadinly far.

Like most other places, the close your park expect to pay more. One tip is to park on the side of the track and on the side of the road you intend to leave on. You cannot cross paths of traffic. Personally, I avoid any big parking lots or big neighborhoods because there is usually just one way out and takes forever to get out.

One good place to park with not too bad of a walk is take Hwy. 11E toward the track, then get off onto Hwy. 394 (if they still allow that). Go right and take the next right at the light (few hundred yards). There are plenty of places to park on the side of the road or in front yards on the roadway. When you leave, just stay on that road (away from 394) and you will eventually come out on 11E.

I've never made the drive but I've heard it's not that long a drive.. Like an hour or two, I'd shoot for earlier the better?

When my Dad and I went to Bristol last year (Spring races), that's where we parked. I wouldn't exactly call that not too bad of a walk. The track is over a mile away.

For the OP:

The drive is about an hour and a half from Asheville, assuming you won't be stuck in traffic getting in. Adding 2.5 hours to that for extra traffic, walking to the track, walking around the souvenir areas, watching pre-race ceremonies / driver intros, etc; I would leave no later than 4 hours before the race (3:45-ish since the race starts at 7:45).

We went to Bristol a few years ago and found parking to be rather difficult. While there are many places to park, you are charged quite a bit regardless of the distance from the track. LIke PAS, we paid $20 for parking and still had to walk nearly 1 1/2 miles to the track.

Loved Bristol , loved the sense you get of a small track , in a small town that grew , and grew . Thank heaven nobody thought to move it twenty miles away so they could offer tons of free parking and tons of camping . You will enjoy the walk and remember the area . Most other tracks are just a sea of asphalt parking area .

Last year for the spring race we followed the tracks parking signs to one of the tracks two free lots and rode a free shuttle (school) bus to the tracks main gate and back after the race and riding that bus up and down those steep muddy and slick hills was a fun adventure itself.

Some folks park and walk 2 miles or more just to keep from paying to park.
