Four NASCAR Whelen Modified Series champions were among six drivers tested at Bristol Motor Speedway during a test session on Tuesday. The fastest time of the day was clocked by L.W. Miller of Dushore, Pa. Miller circled the .533-mile oval in 14.742 sec., breaking Ryan Newman’s Cup Series track record of 14.908 sec. [128.709mph] set in 2003. The cars were running with carburetor restrictor-plates for the test session. Later in the afternoon, a few drivers removed the plates, resulting in even faster times. Ted Christopher, the 2008 Whelen Modified Tour Champion, jumped at the chance to test his car on the concrete track with the engine unrestricted. Christopher turned an incredible lap of 14.479 sec. [133.269mph], a mind-blowing proposition. The Whelen Modified Tour returns Aug. 19 for a doubleheader event with the NASCAR Camping World Series. Other drivers participating in the test were Matt Hirschman, Brian Loftin, Ronnie Silk and Todd Szegedy.(BMS PR)(2-25-2009)

And by the way, even though I'm not a fan of LW Miller's in any way, he is connected with the southern tour, not the northern tour. Miller won his very first modified race at Martinsville some years ago when he was racing in the Featherlite tour in the north but has since moved to Mooresville and runs the southern tour. Brian Loftin is the other southern tour testee and Bobby Hutchens was supposed to be the third, but for some reason, he didn't attend. Quite possibly his work for Tony Stewart got in the way, or his wife's cancer.

Not taking anything away from Christophers lap but I had thought they would have knocked a full second off the cup cars times.

The best racing and fastest at Bristol was when they covered it with dirt and raced the World of Outlaws sprint cars there in 2000 and 2001.
Yes they took 12 degrees of banking out, but here are the numbers
06/08/2001 Sammy Swindell 13.98 seconds or 137 MPH.

Those winged cars should have topped 150. So how would they have done on the concrete? Would they have even been able to stay on the track? I'll take the mods thanks and you can have the WoO.

I love watching the SLM's the best. :beerbang:

Per Kevin Eckert's Open Wheel Times website:

05/24/00 Sammy ran a practice lap of 13.60 seconds or 141 MPH before a NasCrap race on the concrete. The TrashCar qualifying record is 14.908 seconds or 128.709 MPH set by Ryan Newman on 03/21/03. Sammy's lap was 1.308 seconds, 8.77%, and 12.29 MPH faster.

I was going to post this story yesterday, but I couldn't get on the board for a while. I'm sure this will create some buzz for their race, it might have done so if this test was held in July instead of February.

You have to remember that the northern tour and the southern tours are different in that they have different schedules. Also, once the racing begins, there isn't really any down time for them to do such testing. The two tours race with each other only a few times with this one being a new one. They race together at Martinsville and at the end of the season, a non-sanctioned race at Concord Motorsports Park.

My bride and I went to those races and enjoyed the heck out of them even though I am a purist when it comes to wingless vs. wings as used on WoO cars. But, it was good racing and my guess is, the modifieds will kick tail on that track. Might have to consider a return to Bristol for the first time since the appearance of the WoO.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out the ASA Late Model Series races at Bristol, ORP and Rockingham.

Too bad ASALMS and NASCAR Modifieds don't air on TV.

The mods at Bristol and it won't be televised? I'd PPV that!

For those who don't really know what the mods look like or who are interested in this test, check out the video from ESPN at http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=3934748

Don't be fooled thinking that with no fenders, they don't race side by side. On the contrary, they do most of the time AND they will use that chrome bumper all the time. :beerbang:
