NASCAR is considering moving the broadcast of The Night Race at Bristol to ESPN2 nationwide as ABC News is likely to air extended coverage of Hurricane Irene.

That's lame. Most weather predictions are that by tomorrow, it will be a tropical storm with 50mph winds.

On top of that, IF NASCAR does not have the race moved to ESPN2, it will not be available in the following markets: Hampton Roads, Washington DC, Baltimore, Ocean City, Jersey Shore, Dover, Philadelphia and New York City. That's 60 million people.

But, you'll have to admit, with a hurricane on the doorstep, who would be watching a race? And let's not forget, there could also be massive power outages.

And half of those people will be without power or cable anyway, so what's your point? And those that do would probably rather keep an eye on the news of the storm that the race.

ABC alternative TV coverage of Bristol race - NFL games affects some markets: WKRN, Nashville's News 2, will NOT air the Bristol Sprint Cup race due to Tennessee Titans preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The NASCAR race at Bristol on August 27, 2011 will air on ESPN 2 from 6:30pm to 10:00 pm/et [assuming that is just local Nashville for ESPN2].(wkrn.com)
MORE: Due to some ABC affiliates carrying telecasts of NFL pre-season football games or other programming on Saturday night, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol will air regionally on ESPN2 in eight markets: Nashville, Tenn.; Duluth and Rochester, Minn.; Phoenix; Casper, Wy.; Sioux Falls and Rapid City, S.D.; and Weslaco, Tex. In Houston, the race will air on the local ABC affiliate's digital tier station.(ESPN)(8-22-2011)
MORE: On Saturday is the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. The NASCAR Sprint Cup event was originally scheduled to run on Channel 13 in the Houston, Tx area beginning at 6pm, but because of the Texans/San Francisco coverage, the race will be shown on their digital channels. For more ifno and the channels in Houston area, go to abclocal.go.com/ktrk.(8-24-2011)

ESPN: The Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol will air on ABC as scheduled. If breaking news pre-empts NASCAR coverage in local markets, alternate plans will be announced on air.

This means ABC will be the only national outlet not covering Hurricane Irene.

CBS has announced they will have coverage in primetime, NBC and FOX have cable affiliates (MSNBC and FOX "News" Channel) running 24/7 coverage of the storm.

My guess is that, during national commercial breaks, ABC will either interrupt commercials for bulletins or will cut in to race coverage itself, briefly, for bulletins.

i completely understand the population affected by irene, but i have to take the national media to task for the coverage because it is hitting the east coast. seems that the media didn't cover katrina until the damage was done.

sincerely hope everyone does the right thing and makes it through safely.
