Maybe he's found his way to save face and get his Kentucky Speedway date after all? He now has his 'out' to remove one of those Louden dates and move it to Kentucky Speedway. Blame the Louden NH police force. Clever, Bruton. Screw you, Loudon fans. Thanks for all your support but we'll see you later.

The owner of New Hampshire Motor Speedway said Thursday he will consider moving next year's summer race if Loudon's police chief doesn't cut the cost for providing safety details.

NHMS owner Bruton Smith said that if he can't reach a compromise with the town on security costs, he may move next June's race from New Hampshire.

"The dates are scheduled year to year with contracts with NASCAR," said Jerry Gappens, NHMS vice president. "There is the option of doing that. Let's hope it doesn't come to that option."

Gappens said Loudon charges too much to organize security, and Loudon's police chief makes too much doing it. He said Chief Robert Fiske makes $50 per hour, amounting to almost $59,000 for covering the races over five years.

NHMS is asking Loudon to reduce its price tag for June's upcoming race from $170,000 to $65,000.

"No, we're not prepared to do that," said Loudon Selectman Roger Maxfield. "The answer is no, we won't."

Maxfield said he thinks $170,000 to cover an influx of 100,000 people is reasonable, as is Fiske's hourly rate.

"He's also in control of 80 full-time officers, so that's a large detail," Maxfield said.

NHMS has suggested cutting 38 police officers from its camp grounds and replacing them with private security guards supported by a few officers.

Fiske said that plan isn't in the best interest of public safety.

"The crime is consistent with a city of that size," he said. "We have alleged rapes and assaults, let alone the DWIs."

Fiske said that after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the owner of the track at the time asked that security be increased. He said he has been operating with a larger number of officers since then.

City of Loudon's website shows less then 20 occifers. They must bring in others from surrounding towns. Even so $170,000 divided by 80=$2125 each, for a days pay?

My brother still does road details. The town charges a little over $100 for him and one of the old patrol cars that barely runs. His cut is $32 a hour, 4 hour minimum. Ever wonder why the power or cable company wants 7-800 bucks to string a line across a road and it only takes them 20 minutes?

You don't have to look it up, I already did.:)

Seems to me

any city should be happy about having 100,000 visitors, even if only for a day or two or three. I betcha the city does make money from all those guests. The threat of moving such a local moneymaker to another town should get the price he wants for policing the track.
Betsy:rolleyes:

agreed. money talks. Here at TMS, Fort Worth police come in from out of jurisdiction for traffic control. Don't wanna know what that costs. Last year's fall race, they had gogles of squad cars, at least 15 mounted police, a safe dozen bike cops, and even the SWAT team was in a corner on stand by.

Betsy,
Loudon doesn't have the hotel/motel/resturants like Charlotte, Texas, Daytona etc. It's a relatively sleeply small New England town, known mostly for it's winter skiing.
Many of those that I know will drive up Friday and come home, drive back Sat and return home then drive up for Sunday's race. Some will stay in motels 50 miles away in Mass. they do have a camper/RV area that has been GREATLY improved in the past few years, but it can be a long, long walk. I mean like pack a lunch long walk.
Other than ice for the cooler it's really not a big cash cow for the town from what I've seen.
Methinks they are looking at Na$car as the goose that lays golden eggs.
YMMV

This sounds to me like another one of Bruton's threats like he did Concord over the dragstrip.

Bruton is a rectum, and a track collector .The capital improvements @ Loudon in the last 3 years have been over 5 million $. If you think Kentucky will be a cash cow, with a glut of tracks in the region that don't sell out, good luck. When was the last time Vegas sold out,or Charlotte,Bristol,Atlanta,Texas, all of which SMI own/
The last time Loudon sold out was Sept.09.For the 19 consecutive time.Let Bruton blow his smoke. Is money that more important than safety in a city of 100,000 ,even if it is only that size for a few days.

I would rather go to one of Bruton's tracks any day as a Nascar owned track. Much more fan friendly.

Don't get me wrong,I will defend NHMS to the bitter end. I went there when it was Bryar Motorsports Park, and through the years, till it was NHIS.Bruton is a ...entrepenuer..money savvy business man..to get where he is,he did something right. Business wise, not customer wise.
SMI is the antithesis of ....oh well, never mind.

Quit yer cryin'. Anyone remember that little track at North Wilkesboro? One of them dates at NH came from little ol' NW. Bahre and Smitty took not just one, but both dates.

How many tracks are in that region? A glut of tracks exist there.Only one track in New England. Who said anyone was crying? If you want to cry, watch TNT.

Anyone still doubting that Bruton may take a date from Loudon and move it to Kentucky? Loudon has always had sellouts, but not today. That might give Bruton enough reason to move a date. The deadline to notify NASCAR is either this week or next week.

They're reporting that Bruton is to submit an official request this week to realign some of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race dates next season. It sounds likely that the June event will be off of the schedule with this past weekends announcement that NH will be hosting an IRL date in June 2011.

What an a$$! Bruton Smith's latest move towards the NH Exit Plan.....

In response to a $156,300 bill from Loudon officials for police and fire protection at June's NASCAR race weekend, New Hampshire Motor Speedway has sent back a check for $86,000 with a letter requesting a meeting with the selectmen, lawyers on both sides confirmed yesterday.

I'll have to see how that works the next time I go out for dinner.

:beerbang:

I'm glad someone said it, i was about to but you said my piece as well.

I want short track racing back in NC and I want that race at NW. I've never forgiven Bruton for the crap he's pulled with NW, he's proved to be a greedy SOB with that track.
