Basically, what happened was that it was recently discovered that Jim Tressel received an email last April tipping him off about the players who ended up suspended for selling jerseys and other memorabilia. Allegedly, the email came from an attorney who informed coach Tressel that the guy who they were selling stuff to, and trading stuff for tattoo work, was being investigated for drug activity of some type. Tressel said that the email asked for him to not tell anybody about it so as not to compromise the investigation.

The Ohio State University just annouced yesterday that they were suspending coach Tressel for the first two games of this upcoming season and fining him $250,000 for his actions. It is unclear what the NCAA will do in this case. They will likely punish him further, but it is unclear what will be done.

Yes, as a Buckeye fan I am embarrased about this situation. The entire NCAA is a joke, as proven again by letting Cam Newton play even after they knew his father tried to sell his services to the highest bidder. Players should be allowed a small amount of money, this would prevent at least some of these type of things from happening. The schools make millions and millions of dollars off of these athletes and give them nothing but an education, which is debatable in many cases as many aren't really being educated at all. This isn't to excuse what Ohio State players and their head coach has done at all. However, it has to be said.

The entire NCAA is a joke (yes indeed), as proven again by letting Cam Newton play even after they knew his father tried to sell his services to the highest bidder. (college athletics at ncaa division I is nothing less than semi-pro for all intent and purposes. athletes should be treated, and paid, accordingly.)

That wouldn't change a thing. If you put a limit on what the players could be paid, you can bet that some backer would attempt to add to that amount. I feel like SlowNeasy in that I think the players should get paid for what they can get. Yes, it would give the schools with the big buck backers a big advantage, but let's look at what we have now anyway. Once in a while you will get a surprise school that has a great season with players that were never recruited by the big time schools, but seldom does that happen and it would still happen in any case. But I'd add one more caveat to getting paid and that is if an athlete takes money and leaves early for the pros, he should pay the school back all his scholarship money. That would help the schools in a couple of different ways.

This thread should be renamed, Ohio States Tressel get's his "i" dotted. Supposedly squeaky clean coach busted for covering up for his star players. Couldn't happen to a better Coach or University.
