WPIX New York
HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND—
A bus slammed into a Hempstead home Tuesday night as two young boys slept in the front bedroom. Police said a 6-year-old was killed, and his 7-year-old brother was injured.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, a Nassau Inter County Express bus was driving westbound on Fulton Avenue just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when the bus driver saw a pedestrian crossing at Nassau Place.
"The bus driver sees the pedestrian, blows his horn three times as a warning, the pedestrian keeps walking toward the moving bus, who was traveling at the proper rate of speed with the green light, tries to avoid him and is forced to make a hard right turn, hops the curb and strikes the house at 505 Fulton Avenue," said Kenneth Lack, a spokesperson for the Nassau County Police Department.
The bus hit the front bedroom, and even though the bus driver tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian, he was struck and injured as well. Police said the driver of the NICE bus was not intoxicated.
The 6-year-old boy was taken to Winthrop Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said 11 passengers on the bus were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
