Bye Bye Speedcenter and Windtunnel

This may have been talked about already but I don't want to scroll through threads to find it.

I'm a big fan of Speedcenter and Windtunnel, mainly because that's the only program devoted to motorsports news. I really hope Fox Sports 1 has a replacement program for this. I hope they don't leave motorsports on the backburner. Don't get me wrong I like football and stuff but my passion is Racing.

Nascar gets very little coverage on ESPN (as far as news) and Speed's RaceHub is a bit painful to watch sometimes.

Wind tunnel was pretty good, but it lost a little when they ended the call in segment. Sad to see them go. SC I never cared for anyway. nascar now is about the best we have.

Is Dave Despain retiring or something?

I rarely watch that show but the times I did it was pretty good. They should have let those guys reached the 600th episode milestone. Now they have a crooked number. Hehe

no it has to do with changing to Fox Sports 1

Nascar Now schedule is so f'd. It comes on at like 1:30am ET and its late most of the time due to some NFL show or something. bull**** ESPN.

I set the DVR to extend record time by 2 hours just to be sure and catch it. Craven gives some real insight, and what's her name is now wearing short skirts. BONUS!

So who's going to do the all day NASCAR stuff that used to be on Speed? I checked the Speed network schedule for this weekend and there's no racing at all scheduled. So where are we to go to watch the Rolex, and Continental Tire, V*8 Supercar series ?

Speed/Fox1 is on an optional tier of channels for HD here so I only tune in to Speed is if they are showing something I really want to see in a letter boxed full screen format from the basic non HD channels. I think some of Speeds programming might end up on Velosity which is on the standard HD tier of channels here.

I seldom watched either show . Speedcenter had too much filler , not enough news . Wind tunnel never got me hooked , I liked Dave , but he hated Nascar and there was too much other stuff on there .These shows will likely be replaced with better ones .

Agreed. The show wasn't the same when they cut it from 60 to 30 minutes and eliminated the callers.

I'm reading a lot of comments about people missing Speed. Sounds like for the time being that most of the current NASCAR and other racing programming will remain on through the end of the year. It also sounds like the NASCAR content will remain into next year. I don't think folks will miss too much. The mid-week programming was a joke. All the reality show garbage and mutiple replays of Pinks caused me to never look at Speed from Monday through Thursday with few exceptions. At least now, they'll be actual sports programming on that channel during those times.

Wind tunnel was what you watched to find out a bit about all motorsports. I am a minority I know, don't give a flip about nothing but racing, so until or IF another show comes along that has all forms of racing news and in depth interviews and comments, I am having withdrawal symptoms. And I am not looking forward to having to listen to some crap about some thug who can hit or kick a ball around, or some rod something with a hangnail while trying to find racing news.

From what I understand Fox Sports will still broadcast Rolex, Nascar and Sports Car Challenge.

We need a network devoted strictly to racing and racing only. Kind of what SPEED was but better. No monster jam or being faster than a redneck nonsense

yep Speed screwed up with that junk, I would have rather watched a lawnmower race on a home video camera..at least a weekly dirt track race from somewhere. There was plenty of races going on that should have been broadcasted. They lost their focus from people in charge who didn't know what a racing fan is. This next bunch is just as confused or more so. Looks like their idea is to dilute what ESPN has, like somehow they will get more viewers using the same format and oh yeah our mis understood stepchild, auto racing, we will televise some of it, the rest? oh hell give them a sports talk show.

That was the best thing about WT, all the other stuff. Already a glutton of NASCAR shilling out there, now us race fans of the whole spectrum (NOT just NASCAR) have nowhere to go.

red neck didn't bother me, because I am not a fan of imports and I am a redneck..at least there was racing. I can even watch the car resto, car appreciation shows like my classic car. but those aren't what speed needed to be about IMO. Should have had three or four times more racing. dirt flat track motorcycle, dirt cars, lower class pavement car racing, were pretty much ignored along with rally cars and more I am not mentioning. Some were covered briefly in the "on the edge" show, but they re ran the same shows to death.

NBCSN looks poised to become the de facto premier motorsports channel. Once 2015 rolls around they'll have Cup, Nationwide, K&N Pro, Modifieds, Toyota, F1, IndyCar, and ARCA. I do like that FOX is trying to cut in on ESPN's action because they do have too much of a stranglehold on too many sports, and they've used that power to negatively influence said sports (ex: College realignment).

WT still had plenty of Nascar news. I don't think Dave hated Nascar, he just hated that Nascar is all that is talked about and there is plenty other forms of racing to cover. He seems like just a guy who loves motorsports in general.

Exactly, and that's what I'm going to miss.

You guys remember that NASCAR Nation show that speed had on? Boy that was a disaster..

Here is what I am talking about, this is on every night. Not one of the talking heads they have on this show knows absolutely anything about racing. bunch of retired stick n ball people.
Capturing all of the sports action throughout the day, fans can catch up with motor sports news as part of the new FOX Sports Live, the flagship news, opinion and highlights program airing nightly on FOX Sports 1, premiering at 11 p.m. ET on Aug. 17. For more information on FOX Sports Live, please visit: HERE

"In addition, the nightly news and magazine show, NASCAR Race Hub, continues on FOX Sports 1 in a new time slot -- 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday -- with popular hosts Steve Byrnes and Danielle Trotta."
How many nascar fans are home at 4:30 pm et on a work day?

Fox sports live will have five mins of motorsports talk, all Nascar.. with that time slot, they're competing with sportscenter head to head.

At least the race Hub will still be airing

Yeah, and they are going to have the pre race and post race show, so hopefully they will have time to interview the drivers a bit and won't cut to the talking heads right after the race.

Problem is there just aren't enough race fans to justify a channel 24/7.
Early years of cable TV had tons of niche channels with small audiences. But the owners aren't happy with that anymore and want a broader audience.
Perversely, Speed's wide distribution is what made it such an attractive target to be converted into a general-interest sports channel.
This has happened to other channels. Scifi network became SyFy and their most popular shows are WWE Smackdown and stupid fake ghost hunting shows. The traditional scifi shows mainly attracted a small group of geeky males. So SyFy shifted into more fantasy/supernatural shows to attract women, and added wrestling to attract a wider demographic.
Every network wants to be ESPN or USA and get the big carriage fees. Discovery channels went from being educational to being filled with reality TV trash. Cause actual educational shows are boring for most people.

I seem to remember Dave Despain going off on a caller one night. Funny stuff. Can't remember what it was about. Anyone have a clue??? Good show and He did a good job.

Exactly. I think the main problem with racing is its once a week, mostly on weekends and the racing itself is the only thing that draws. There is just too much filler content that makes the network no money.

Despain doesn't go off on this one, but it's post-worthy. Some other gems in the links on the page:

Here is your Mower race . That's 'ol Miles on the sled....
