Cal may be in over his head

I have no clue how much Pontiac kicked inot Cal's team nor how much the Tide deal is worth. I do know that running an effective engine program on your own is outrageously expensive. Originally I think the story was that Cal would get his powerplants form Hendrick, wonder what soured that deal. I hope for Ricky Craven's sake that this works out, but I have my doubts.

From NOL's Buzz:

Cal Wells III and his #32 PPI Motorsports team will do their own engines beginning in 2003, when the team -- with driver Ricky Craven -- plans to switch from the Ford Tauruses it currently runs to the newly designed 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. Wells' team currently employs Ford engines from Robert Yates Racing, and is extremely pleased with the power output. However, unlike Roush Racing -- which has heavy Ford involvement but has built GM engines for the NASCAR Busch Series -- Yates does no GM engines. Wells plans to announce the head of his engine program this week

Doesnt sound like a good idea at all to me HS. Cal wells has enough on his hands with the switch to pontiac. Building his own engines sounds like a bad idea. But who knows it may just work...

Wow. Well, if anyone can do it, Cal Well probably can. I've heard he's built a large enough facility to back up that sort of thing, and I know he has some money in his pockets if Tide can't foot the whole bill. Giving up those Yates motors though, that's not something I would have advised.

I thought it was Childress who was going to supply the motors. Regardless, I believe this is something that will take some time to work 100%. Might be a steep learning year for the Tide boys in '03.

Plus there is talk they might add a second team? Cal is filling his dinner plate awfully high.

I think he should use the Hendricks motors next year then in 2004 try to build his own motor program so that he will have a handle on the pontaic and have a better idea how the Gm mototr works.

how much eccentive is he getting to change to pontiac though.....

Cal's "in house" program might involve a lot of out sourcing. There are plenty of people "out there" who could handle special areas. They're really not too hard to find.

Well, I heard they got some guys from the Gibbs shop, wonder if they're engine guys? Probably cassis though, doubt Cronquist would change homes......

Gibbs did have his own engine program though....
