24% Of California High School Students Drop Out
SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― In the last school year, nearly a quarter of California's public high school students dropped out before graduating, according to figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Education.

The new data showed a slightly more than 24 percent drop out rate in the 2006-07 school year, much higher than previously estimated.

The data was compiled from a newly implemented tracking system that issues each student an identifier number. The number enables officials to monitor each student as he or she progresses through school, allowing for a more accurate accounting.

According to the new system that started tracking students in 2002, 67.6 percent of students graduated, 24.2 percent dropped out, and 8.2 percent withdrew - completing high school equivalency diplomas, moving out of state or transferring to private school.

The new data revealed high dropout rates for minority students: 41.3 percent of black students, 31.3 percent of Native Americans, 30.3 percent of Hispanics, and 27.9 percent of Pacific Islanders. White students had a 15.2 percent dropout rate, while Asians had a 10.2 percent rate.

"Twenty-four percent of students dropping out is not good news," said Superintendent of Education Jack O'Connell. "In fact, any student dropping out is one too many and the data reveal a disturbingly high dropout rate for Latinos and African-Americans."

Because the numbers are the first using the new computerized tracking system, no real comparison exists with the previous year.

Officials contend the new data doesn't necessarily represent an increase in the number of students dropping out of school. It does, however, provide a more accurate picture of which students are not making it through California's public education system.

State education officials have been criticized in the past for using self-reported, unaudited data from school districts that resulted in a graduation rate of 85 percent, which critics charged was deliberately inflated in order to comply with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Utilizing the old system in the 2005-06 school year, the Department of Education had estimated that only about 13 percent of students had dropped out.

The new numbers paint a more realistic picture of dropouts, but still underestimate the problem, said Alan Bonsteel, president of California Parents for Educational Choice.

He estimated the state's real dropout rate is acutally 33 percent.

The state is downplaying the dropout rate by overestimating student withdrawals - those who transfer, move or earn GEDs normally make up a tiny fraction of enrollment, he said.

The state is also not including middle-school dropouts, which Bonsteel put at 4 percent, to come up with a total dropout rate of 37 percent.

"We're seeing some improvement, but they still missed one third," Bonsteel said.

This is certainly not a good thing. It's hard to say how many of these young people will end up in prison, but I would venture to say it is a pretty high percentage.

I quit school myself in the 11th grade. After working in a car wash over the summer and talking to some people like my brother, I was pretty much ready to go back and try school again in the fall. I did and I ended up graduating a year later than I would have if I hadn't quit. I have no idea how I would have been able to support my family for the last 17 years or so without a diploma.

I don't think these kids realize how many people will not hire somebody without a high school diploma. Many of these kids are probably dealing drugs or doing manual labor that seems like a good paying job right now.

i agree. i'm forcasting it to the point that most places will start requiring an AS for job placement. Both of my cousins back in LA were good in school till they hit high school, found drugs. I think one finally got his GED, not sure on the other.

Sad but true.. maybe if they would actually pay teachers a decent wage they would be willing to invest more of themselves in these children.. not that most teachers dont already do that but they really need more $$$ for teachers!!!! WHy are there so many drop outs??? Drugs ..pregnancy.. lack of supervision. Maybe more planned parenthoods and drug counseling would help.. we have one planned parenthood in our WHOLE county and its only open ONE day a week for 6 hours. In small towns in small counties like mine.. there sure aint a hell of lot to do.. unfortunately sex..partying..and drugs are just as big as problem here as in the big cities!! And we wonder why so many girls end up pregnant and on welfare??!! Maybe if more parents would take responsiblity for their children and actually keep track of what their kids were doing.. maybe more would stay in school!! Unfortunately with our economy the way it is both parents are forced to work and its really hard to make family time.. how sad it is :(
Im glad my kids were raised with values.. respect for their elders and actual morals.. both my kids had perfect attendance.. not cuz they were perfect but because they knew id kick their asses if they missed any school!! I find most kids today are so disrespectful it makes me sick!!! Parents take responsibility for your kids.. Dads be a dad not just a baby father.. moms envolve your kids in family time.. Its just really not that hard!!!!

i agree. growing up here in california i seen kids drop out for many reasons only to regreat it latter. myself i was never an A student but i knew how to get by enough to graduate. there where times that others offered me drugs or alchool but i would refuse because i know it would let my parents, grandparents and entire family down. as you said parents need to teach there children values. i know if i personaly would of dropped out or done drugs while i was in school i wouldnt even bother going back to my house because my parents would beat the crap out of me. unfortinitly due to the economy right now there are several cytbacks on every thing and its useually the schools that get the cutbacks first. no more after school specials so what are the kids gonna do after school. i posted this thread out of disbelief that 1 out of ever 4 students in california (most populated state) drop out.

I agree 1000% as a peer and student.

I've got i think i'm up to 9 friends that had kids before graduation (2 more got pregnant this year, that will be seniors this fall). 4 never graduated, other 3 graduated early.

**don't read if this sort of material is unpreferred or offensive. It's what i've seen as a high school student**

underage sex and drinking is another thing. As a friend, I'd LOVE for the national age of consent to be put at 18 and set there. So all the guys using the wrong brain can have a criminal record and learn to use the right brain. And our school knows kids as young as 7th grade are drinking, but (for whatever reason) wont and doesn't do a thing about it. We even had seniors drinking on campus and that meant nothing. I think i'm one of maybe.....not even a handful that havent touched alchohol this graduation year. We had senior campout (yes you read that right...) the day before senior sunday practice, i purposely didn't go, but half the grade was hungover. It was ugly. There's only 3 roads to the red river, and you can find drunk pre-21's at each entrance i'm sure any night. My coworker is 19 and got a DUI....somehow got away with AA and a fine..i wish he'd'a got time. How he still has a job is beyond me.

Thinking off the top of my head, out of a class of 72 or so, I know att least 15 or 20 moderate or more drinkers and at least as many if not more aren't virgins.

One girl our 8th grade year was at a party, her and her BF hid in a chicken coop. When the police found them in there, his pants were down and she was on her knees...that family left the area for a good while. She came back few months ago..pregnant (not surprising).

Once girl the school year before last came from AZ, she was an open Nymph (note capital N- she changed it from an adjective to a noun), and playing double-crosser, found out she had a long and messy record in both TX and AZ of somewhere around 8-10 guys. No telling by now.

Also, towards the end of this school year, a girl was drugged and raped at a party. Didn't find out till she went to a doctor for stomach pains.

I'll stop there so you can clean your keyboards now.

Makes me wonder how many STD's were circulating the school.
