well, our FDmavica finally died....so we're seeing if we can make my dad's camera a halfway-decent one or not or if we need a new one.....

What do ya'll use for cameras at the races (we're speaking digital cameras)? How powerful is each zoom level (optical/digital) and what kind of viewfinder does it have? Our FDmavica was 2.0MP and 3x optical/6x digital zoom and has a 2" LCD screen..

We've got several, but the best two are a Canon Powershot Pro1 which is 8 megapixels and a Kodak Easy Share CX7430, which is a 4 megapixel. Both cameras give great shots and the Canon has much better zoom capabilities.

Cameras are all about how much you want to spend.. I shoot a Canon Rebal 8mp with a 50/500 lens. 10 optical will get you up close and personal across the track.
Many modern camera lens now have an anti-shake device inside them that PREVENTS camera shake. GET OUT and look at them all.. Make a well thought out purchase.
My opinion..smaller is NOT better. Look for lots of megapixells and lots of optical advantage..
I think there are 5 or 6 mp cameras with 12 optical to be had. These type of cameras will allow lots of enlarging with your home program..

we dont print them...this one was only 2 MP @ 640*480 images... cost is a big factor..and a 2" screen helps in tracking cars

Betsy, I've been wanting that camera for a long time, even before it was an 8 mp camera that is significantly better than the original 6mp one. But the wife dropped a bundle on the ProShot 1 so that ended that. :(

I do have to say though that my little Kodak is much more than I had thought it would be and it's not very expensive.

damn...!

thats what i do with crutchfield audio..shop there, buy elsewhere...

Howdy Buckaroo I had a 6mp first and when these 8mp were coming out I put a deposit down at Amazon and found a friend that purchased the 6mp from me. The 50/500 is a 10 power lens and combined with the capabilities of the Cannon I do get some great long shots.

Bucky, I do all my shopping after check in at Cnet.com. There you can read reviews of a product and then check out the various place that sell it and the price. They give reviews and buyer's reviews of the places as well so you can stay away from the bad places.

Betsy, there are a couple of great camera shops on ebay that have some great combinations for not only that camera, but all the cameras they sell. I may one day actually get to purchase the Rebel XT. Check out this package... http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-Digital-REBEL-XT-Camera-3-Lens-1GB-NEW-US_W0QQitemZ7585481083QQcategoryZ107909QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Yea, thats why I like newegg, because people who buy and use the products leave reviews. I had a friend do the ebay camera package thing....All i'll say becarful of the cheap add-ons they give you.

Buckaroo I simply purchase a camera body and then purchase the EXACT lenses I really want or need.. All my short distance lenses have the anti-shake device in them. With one of these lenses there is never a doubt about triggering the lens! Never any camera shake at all. But the bigger lenses need a place to anchor from...such as a tripod... I also use a car window mount, it works fine for wildlife and other photos that I might take from a vehicle.
I never purchase the high priced "extras" some dealers push on the buyer..
