I think they could if they were in = Equipment !!!!!

What do you all think ??????????????

Overall I guess the American drivers, mechanics, and manufacturers don't seem all that interested !!!

It's the American fans that aren't interested. F1 is more about the car than it is about the driver's good looks or personality. The drivers in F1 are robots and they're paid to be robots.

Americans need to root for a good guy and a bad guy if they're going to get into a motorsport. The majority could care less about the level of competition.

I saw somewhere that an entry level series is being put together with an American sponsor to get one U.S. driver back into the F1. I think it's a matter of the incredible amount of money F1 teams spend and the drivers here not being trained and groomed to the same extent as is the case on most other continents. There just isn't that much competitive road racing in the states.

True! Road Racing isn't very big here !!!

Would be nice to see someone go over there and do well !!!

I just have a weird feeling that Tony Stewart isn't going to stay in Nascar forever! Maybe I'm wrong.

What will Tony do when he leaves nascar ???????????

Tony doesn't like NASCAR but I don't think he has what it takes. He's over 30 and most F1 drivers were test driving for F1 teams by the time they were 21.

My guess is that Tony may run the IRL series and then run special races in other series. Basically what AJ Foyt and Mario did back in the Day !!!

I don't know if Tony could make it through a race without punching one of those F1 guys out !!!!!!!

LOL j/k

There certainly IS a quite a bit of competitive road racing in the states: American LeMans, Formula Atlantic, GT, SCCA to name a few. Even CART and NASCAR have their share: Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen. It just seems that the majority of US race fans (including some of the posters in this thread) choose not to pay any attention...

Regarding an American driver in F1, Red Bull is sponsoring a "talent search" program, spear-headed by former F1 pilot Danny Sullivan, to find a driver who they feel has both the ability, talent and character to compete at the F1 level. I believe that the chosen one would end up with a F3000 drive as the next logical step.

Finally, F1 drivers are treated as bonified sports superstars in there respective countries and, for the most part, everywhere except the US. These guys are certainly not "robots" who simply drive for their team. As a matter of fact, they are probably the most egotistical sporting personalities on the planet. Both Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher are equally as popular outside the US.

I know this. And I pay quite a bit of attention to road racing in America. My point, if you had paid any attention to it, was to say that the majority of American racing fans don't care. They care more about what a driver looks like or what he says. Whereas they view F1 drivers as robots, or snotty egomaniacs with accents.

You can try reading the thread again, if you're having a hard time understanding what's being said.

I just can't see watching F1 personally!

Every time I watch, the races are always blowouts!!

and it is always the same driver or two !!!

I was looking forward to F1 at Indy last year !!!

I watched part of it on TV but it was horrible !!! I had to turn it off !!!
They just need more = cars with more equal competition !!

No fun to me to watch Schu run away and win a race by 1 or 2 minutes !!!!! The cars interest me because of the incredible technology in them, but thats about it!

Too bad for you.

When it's all over and you're old and grey and people ask you what it was like to have watched the best ever race, all you're gonna say is "It was boring". I feel priviliged to be alive watching him dominate.

I used to live about 30 minutes from Virginia International Raceway. I Decided one day to take a motorcycle ride up to the track and take a look around!

I pulled up to the gate and a security guard said You have to leave you can't be here! He wouldn't tell me anything about the track or what kind of cars ran there or anything !!!

I was dissapointed with the track after that. I later got all the info off of the internet but the bad taste was still in my mouth!

If you go to a Nascar Track everyone is really nice and pleasant and they want to show you their track !!!!

basically just put a sour taste in my mouth about the whole road racing thing !!!!!!!

So I take it that Paul is a big time Schu fan !!!

Well I guess if your favorite guy is winning almost every race .....then everything would be just peachy clean !!!!!!!!

:)

No, I like Coulthard and Kimi.

Don't really like Schumacher at all to be honest. But I appreciate what he's doing.

I would like to say yes but when you think of the drivers in the U.S. road racing series most of them are from another country, there are a few Americans that I can think of like P. Tracy and M. Andretti but I don't think those guys would fair that good in F1 and most of the NASCAR drivers I don't think would stand a chance except for a few like Tony and Robby, mainly because they wouldn't have bumpers, they would have to spend some time learning how to drive open wheel cars

Nice to hear that Red Bull and Danny Sullivan are searching for potential F1 drivers in America !!!

We need to get back into that sport!!!

We need more stars on the interntional level of Auto Racing!!

yeah, but its basically the same thing..:)... and while i still like and watch F1, i can see why it is not popular in america, most of the U.S. and particularly in the south where NASCAR thrives, they want to see driver vs. car racing, and F1 and most road racing in fact is driver vs. track racing, they have to shave off track time where ever they can, not race the other drivers (for the most part), and, as a rule, americans do not like technology because the more technology there is, the less human control there is, and in life, not just racing, americans are scared of that...truth betold F1 is 90% car...and I am NOT saying that it isnt good racing, its just a vastly different style of racing

Just because there is technology doesn't mean the driver isn't driving. 90% of the time the car is not being "driven by a computer".

I bet Schumacher would be a champion in any car he drove.

It's interesting that Michael Andretti's name comes up. People seem to have forgotten that he drove for McClaren in 1993. Not nearly successful as his dad, though - 7 retirements ultimately ending up with 7 points and only one podium (3rd at Monza)

No one has forgotten that he drove the same car Senna won a bunch of races in.

It's been discussed many times. :)

put an F1 driver in a champ car or a GT car without all the technology, then we'll see how great they are.

Seeing as many of them came from CART and the IRL, there's no need for them to prove themselves again in those series'.

Aside from JPM, which of the other current F1 drivers came throught the ranks of CART and/or the IRL?

No current.

But I thought he was talking about F1 drivers in general.

Well....Congrats to Paul for his maturity and objectivity....

Way to go Paul.....;)))

Did someone say that Tony Stewart would have to learn how to run an open wheel car????????/

What are you smoking ??

Tony has more open wheel seat time than he has Stock Car seat time !!!!!!!!!

HE won an IRL Title !!!!

My apologies to the all the Canadian fans out there! Kind of embarassing to forget about JV...an Indy 500 winner PLUS an F1 world champion. Duh!

Paul..I told you before...you do an excellet job as monitor of this forum...You're fair...mature...and precise....and to me in particular you have been very helpful and informative....I want to thank you publicaly...
I say this in all sincerity....You should see the mess that some people make of other forums ...just to instigate and annoy somebody else
Way to go Paul

We have them here too Cher, but they know very well that I don't stand for it.

Good for you...
In the last little while I abstained from writing ( as you well know Paul) in this and all other forums due to heavy personal circumstances. I dropped the other forum (the one in question)completely...because I wasn't learing anything anymore from it....and reading isults I've never heard before in my life) it's not my cup of tea....

Pertinent information:...;)
By the way...if any of you intends to write a book of insults...I suggest you visit that forum....In that respects....it's tops..... ehehhehehehehe

Nice to see that at least a few of the forum posters recognize that CART and F1 have more than a few commonalities. I never (much) watched F1 until Michael went over and since then I've watched absolutely every race that I could. And it's always so much more interesting when other allumni ventured forth. J. Villeneuve was one of my most adored drivers (fellow countryman and worthy CART Champion) amd as much as I loathed Montoya's dominance -- I wish him every success in F1! And then we must never forget Nigel coming over here and then his DUD return to F1 -- so there are many cross-overs -- probably many more that I'm not aware of. Why is one world-wide popular -- and the other not? Beats the hell out of me! I wish CART every success and death to the IRL! F1 will go on forever like the 'fairy tale -- soap opera' that it is.

As to why Americans DO NOT like road races -- I think it's because the 'average' fan can't see -- therefore comprehend -- all that's going on. When you watch an oval race it's all there.

Reminds me of when I go to watch a live sports event (hockey) and as soon as a goal is scored I (think) that I need to see the video replay to appreciate what happened. Why???

We all need more imagination and passion!!!!

Mario / Emmerson / Nelson / those guys from Japan now in CART -- and probably a whole bunch of other guys!

When The Indy 500 was an event -- there were lots who ventured into 'The Show'!

DUH!

Hey -- it's past my bedtime!

Definitely, but until F1 gets an American driver the sport will never ever attain the popularity levels of NASCAR which astounds me. Just look at CART for a good example. They are desperately holding onto Michael Andretti who is obviously well past his sell by date.

F1 will never be as popular as NASCAR in America.
NASCAR was founded in America.

Q: Can any Americans run with the guys in F1?
A: Yes, Danica Patrick, if they keep fuel in her car.
