Can someone please explain this to me?

I knew the rules were goofy regarding how much money each driver wins per race, but I had no idea they were this strange!

Compare the earnings of Dale Earnhardt Jr. to Steve Park after Sunday's UAW-GM 500 in Charlotte:

9. (13) Dale Earnhardt Jr, Chevrolet, 334, $69,300.

15. (34) Steve Park, Chevrolet, 333, $80,925.

Please don't get me wrong: I don't think Dale Jr. needs anymore money than he already has, but how is it justified that Steve earned more this particular race? He finished behind Jr. He didn't lead one lap. He's much lower in the standings than Jr. If it's owner points, then that makes even less sense.

Oh, and while you're at it, what's the deal with those "333", "329", etc. figures before the listed earnings?

Someone, please, enlighten me!

The number before the earnings is number of laps completed.

Not sure about the money stuff - has to do with sponsors, how many, committments, etc. Even though this would lead me to think that Jr would be even higher...

its all to do with sponsers with that race Like Kyle he nevers get much money cause he aint with gatoraid or Bud so it is just to deal with teh stickers on the cars

Thanks for editing that. I was going to delete the excess stats myself, but thought about it 11 minutes too late. :)

Contigency money is added to the purse.

Contgency money comes mainly from decals but also there is incentive money like maybe Penzoil puts some money in the pot if it beats the Quaker State or Mobil One car.

Anyways, count the decals....The Pensoil car looks to me like it carries about 30 while the Bud car looks like it has about 20. That could explain some of it.

Thanks for your responses. :)

I guess that sounds about right. Weird that Jr. wouldn't want/couldn't get more stickers on his car. Was it for aesthetic reasons, I wonder, or did Steve have some major bills to pay this week?

The main sponser has a say on the # of small decals. Bud prob. doesn't want all the clutter on thier car. STP was one of the worst, look at some of Richards old cars. Some of the companies pay for 3rd or 5th place finishers with thier sticker on the car. I can't remember which one it is but one co. paid like $500.00 to the 4th place car. The only way to get in the Bud Shootout is to win the pole and you have to have the Bud decal on your car.

Well, that's one decal Steve Park didn't get this year.

Do you have to have won the pole (or be Dale Jr.) to be allowed a Bud decal on your car? I mean, is Bud picky about who they will or won't sponsor, even in an minor way, because of the Bud Pole award and all that?

All the cars can have the bud sticker on the car, it is the small one under the Winston decal. But some car owners refuse to put it on thier car. Even Rusty has it on his:) I can't remember but a driver won the pole and didn't have the Bud decal on his car one year. I think it was John Andretti, but I may be wrong.

It was Andretti cause Petty Enterprise don't put the bud sticker on their cars Richard don't like it He hated when Kyle was with Coors Light back in 95'96 but Kyle couldent help it since he did not own the car

I think past champs qualify too, as well as other winners of the Bud shoot-out.

Wow, that's very interesting. Thanks everyone. :)

Weird that the King would have such a hangup about beer sponsors. Do you suppose Kyle or John or Jerry wouldn't wear the Bud hat if they won the pole?

I can't belive I got that right.:D I have a better memory than I thought. I can remember stupid things that won't make a hill of beans. If only I could remember things like that while I was in school.:p

I'd always heard it was Mrs. Petty who originally forbade Richard from carrying any beer logos, and the King, not wanting to upset the Queen, just kinda said "Yes, dear...". I always thought it was kinda weird. The Budweiser logo wasn't appropriate, but the Winston logo was okay.

I remember a few years ago when "Penthouse" magazine sposored a funny car in the NHRA. Quite a few of the competitors thought that an 'Adult Entertainment' sponsor was inappropriate for such a family-friendly sport. Never mind that some of them were sponsored by beer or tobacco companies and raced in the Winston Drag Racing Series. I guess it depends on which form of 'Adult Entertainment' you prefer.

Richard does not sponser Beer at the request of his Mother.Scrab might be able to find something on this.I saw it on Beyond the glory.

I saw that too pb, and there others that will not allow anyone on their teams to use any type of alcohol sponsor remotely associated with their team.

I just found this, written by a fan:

"Richard Petty promised his mother years ago, that he would never put a beer sticker/endorsement on his car, and because of that promise, has never raced in the Busch Clash, held in February in Daytona. And he is still true to his word to his mother, as a Car Owner."

Is it true about the Busch Clash? If so, I find that very quaint. :)
