(AFP) - The captain of a luxury liner that hit a rock and keeled over off the coast of Tuscany, killing at least six, did not respond to an order to return on board to oversee rescue operations, according to a taped telephone conversation released Monday.

ANSA news agency said Francesco Schettino, captain of the Costa Concordia, was evasive when ordered by a port official to supervise the rescue hours after the disaster Friday while several hundred people were still trapped on board.

"Now you go to the bow, you climb up the emergency ladder and coordinate the evacuation," the official tells him, according to the transcript of the conversation recorded on one of the ship's "black boxes."

"You must tell us how many people, children, women and passengers are there and the exact number of each category," he said.

"What are you doing? Are you abandoning the rescue? Captain, this is an order, I am the one in charge now. You have declared abandoning ship," he said, adding, "There are already bodies."

"How many?" Schettino says, prompting the cutting reply, "That is for you to tell me, what are you doing? Do you want to go home?"

Earlier, Schettino said in another telephone call that we "cannot get on board because the rear of the ship is keeling over."

ANSA also said there was a kind of "mutiny" among the crew which decided on an evacuation before being given formal orders by the captain.

Schettino was arrested on Saturday along with first officer Ciro Ambrosio. They face possible charges of homicide and abandoning ship before all the passengers were rescued.

Now this piece of crap is at HOME on house arrest.:mad:

ROME (AP) - An Italian coast guard official vehemently demanded that the captain go back to his crippled cruise ship to oversee its evacuation, but the captain repeatedly resisted, according to a shocking audiotape made public Tuesday.

Prosecutors have accused Capt. Francesco Schettino of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his vessel before all passengers were evacuated during the grounding of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the Tuscan coast on Friday night.

After Schettino was interrogated by prosecutors for three hours Tuesday, a judge in Grosseto, Tuscany, ruled that the captain, who had been detained a few hours after he allegedly abandoned the Concordia, should be released from jail and confined to his home near Naples under house arrest, his lawyer, Bruno Leporatti, told reporters outside the courthouse.

Prosecutors wanted him kept in Grosseto's prison, and Leporatti had asked that he be freed

Put him in a 100 ft fishing boat by himself and make him cruise the Somali coast.

This **** just keeps growing.

The captain of the Italian cruise ship gave a slapstick explanation of how he ended up safely in a lifeboat instead of going down with his ship, saying he tripped and fell into the boat as it was being lowered into the sea, Italian media reported today.

"I had no intention of escaping," Francesco Schettino, 52, said during his first court hearing Tuesday, according to Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"I was helping some passengers put the life boat to sea. At a certain point the mechanism for lowering it, blocked. We had to force it. Suddenly the system unblocked itself and I tripped and I found myself inside the life boat with a number of passengers."

Once in the lifeboat that was lowered into the sea, Schettino insisted to the court that it was "impossible to go back onboard."

The captain also reportedly admitted to the court that he lied at one point when he assured officials that he had dropped anchor shortly after the Costa Concordia slammed into a rock to stabilize the luxury liner.

And I "tripped and fell" in to Wendy's.

I trip almost over everything, but I've been on several cruises and have never tripped into the lifeboat:rolleyes:
