I dont know if any of you has ever seen anything from argentinian car racing, i presume you know Juan Manuel Fangio, best driver ever, 5 times Formula 1 champion, but i dont know if you have ever heard about the series that he came from: Turismo Carretera.
This series began in the mid 30's in argentinian roads, with grand prixs with hundreds or thousend miles of length. The most legendary perhaps was the South American Grand Prix in 1949 also called ''Buenos Aires-Caracas'', because it started in Buenos Aires and finished in Venezuela's capital Caracas, in a raid with 5935 miles of length. Racing in roads finished at early 90's, when for safety reasons the few remaning open road races where taken out of the calendary. Since that time , the Turismo Carretera races are in race tracks, but the passion of people is the same. This series presents an average of 65 cars in each race, with a maximum that can reach 80, presenting Ford Falcon, Chevrolet Chevy, Dodge Polara GTX and Kaiser Torino.
The particular thing is that these cars are the same models since early 70's, wiht 21st century's tecnology( however right now 90% of cars are replics of those). But if cars are sepecial people are the most especial thing this series have, people that stand cold, heat, rain, storms, people that travels miles and miles to see the racers, and people that feels driver and cars as part of themselves. I hope you will be interested to know more about Turismo Carretera, i will be glad to answer your questions.
