The complete season-by-season stats for the late, great Dale. They'll probably read a lot better if you first copy-and-paste them into Microsoft Word.

Funny how no one complains about him when the numbers show the real story.............;)

You people can't believe people would dare use those excuses about Dale Sr, yet when someone brings up Richard Petty's numbers you all use those tactics yourselves.

Round and round it goes

And to escalate that fight even more lets add Jeff Gordon's stats to the mix.

List Dales, Richards and Jeff's stats and you'll see unarguable great drivers. For that matter add Pearson, Yarborough, Allison and a flock of others way way way before my time. Whether you like the driver or not their stats tell the story. And if you're honest you'll agree with their great driving ability and not attribute any of their stats to conspiracy theories.

I've always been a stats person.

When confronted with the typical, "Dale was the best driver of all time" line I usually point people to his stats, then ask them to compare those stats to Richard Petty's or any of the other drivers who's stats are bigger and better, I'm told those other drivers were cheaters, had better equipment than anyone else etc etc.

But it's not ok, apparently, to say those things about Sr.

Just seems strange to me...

I agree with you Paul. But at least on this forum the disagreements are civil. :)

It's really unfair to compare stats of drivers especially drivers from different eras. So many variables involved. I find it almost impossible to rank drivers. And then add the human element and that makes it even more impossible. Their accomplishments should stand on their own and each should be applauded.

I dont understand why it is so easy for fans to praise his/her driver almost to the point of worship and at the same time find it so hard for fans to give simple respect and credit to every other driver. Perhaps I'm too new to the sport but I hope I never become that jaded.

During Trackside on the Speed Channel fans cheered when Spencer's release was announced. That disgusted me. Spencer isn't my favorite driver but I feel bad that he's lost his ride.

It's been discussed at great length the double standard that exists.

There is a group of drivers that seem to be the brunt of "fan's" jokes. What I mean is that fans can rake a driver over the coals without regret, yet cry complete and utter foul when their driver is criticised even slightly.

They can't believe that people would dare call their driver "dirty" or perhaps was less than civil on track a few times, but are the first to comment on certain drivers looks or weight or physical features.

I've seen threads go pages upon pages of people fighting because another fan opined about an on track incident in even the most innocent of ways.

As long as people are good natured and, at least, a little open minded about driver "bashing", I enjoy a good argument about who's best......but, who's best is very seldom objective.:) It is very hard to arrive at who's best in any real sense using statistics, yet that is probably the only way things can be explained. I just went to a site I saved a long time ago that offers some side by side comparisons.....not complete by any means but it gives a somewhat objective view of a few of the "Best".

I compared Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, David Pearson, and Jeff Gordon (though Jeffie's career is still growing, so that is not really a good comparison). With a calculator I came up with what I think was some type of driver "ranking" comparing wins to starts, poles to starts, and championships to starts. Among Petty, Pearson, and Earnhardt you can say it's a wash depending on what you consider the most important comparison! But, good ole Jeffie if he should retire right now wins hands down in every catagory!:) I won't list all my calculations, but if anyone's interested they can go do their own math and decide for themselves.:D Numbers are fun......but they don't tell it all.:)

BTW......I'm still a staunch Dale Earnhardt fan (no matter what the numbers say!!):D

Yes Paul I too have seen those very threads that go on and on. Fans defend their driver at all cost, see nothing wrong in what their driver did but see all faults in other drivers and make up a few things. Fans will give the highest accolades to their favorite driver but let one poster reply negatively, even in the most polite terms, and he/she will be loathed and spit on.

Also the Gordon is gay, Tony is a punk, Jr is a drunk threads have no business being on forums. Those are the very threads that drew me to this forum. Now I'm not a puritan that cringes at the sight of those words I just don't understand there relevance other than creating controvercy and a fight. Fans fall for it every time. Those threads will get some 50 or more responses and yet an interesting, thought provoking and knowledgeable thread barely gets a look.

I'm all for having a good time and a good debate and a little jostling but sometimes it goes a little too far.
