NASCAR driver hands trophy to fan
Aug. 25: NASCAR driver Carl Edwards gives 15-year-old wheelchair-bound fan his trophy after winning at the Michigan International Speedway. WPBN's Rob Preston reports. (NBC News Channel)
MICHIGAN (NBC) -- A wheelchair-bound Michigan teen got a special gift from one of his heroes over the weekend. Pat and Teresa Byrnes took their son Cody to the Michigan International Speedway so he could see his favorite driver, Carl Edwards, race. "Carl happened to be walking by and we gave him a thumbs up and Cody gave him a thumbs up and he saw his flag waiving on the back of Cody's chair. And so he stopped, turned around and came back and he came over and he signed his wheelchair and he signed his shirt," said Teresa Byrnes.

The Byrnes were already excited that Cody got to meet his hero, but they weren't prepared for what Carl Edwards told Cody next. "He looked at him and he said, 'Hey buddy, I'll tell you, if I win that trophy today, now that's if I win, I'll give you that trophy'," Teresa recalled.

The Byrnes say they began to realize Edwards could win the race when he moved from the 27th spot to first place in about 60 laps. Pat Byrnes says that's the most nervous he's ever been during a race. Edwards did win that race. Carl Edwards signed the trophy for Cody with the initials NGU, which means never give up.

"Cody, everyday he wakes up and sees it. It's like he's realizing it's really his and he'll get excited and squeal, for someone to work so hard to get that trophy and then to say, 'Here, you can have it'. That is the kindest gesture anybody has ever done," said Teresa.

His trophy case for cup wins must be awfully empty. Doesn't he give away most of them?

Now a cynical person would say the reason he gave the trophy away was because he felt guilty for winning the way he did. Having to resort to the bump and run to get around Kyle.

Me, I agree with the bump and run 100%, at least the way he did it. Now if a driver puts them into the wall or causes others to get wrecked then they did it wrong. But what he did was minimal.

Oh, and if I were racing I'd put one of those tapered snow blades on the front of my car. Maybe some races I'd even be nice and have the taper point to the inside rather than the wall. There'd not be more than 1 car finishing on the lead lap... ;)

That cynical person would be wrong. This was Michigan, not Bristol. ;)

I thought Carl's move was perfectly acceptable. And KY has no room to complain about it. He would've done the same had he been in that position.

No he wouldn't. He would have put Carl into the wall and if it took out half the field he would have gone merrily on his way...and you know it. Don't go defending Kyle. He's going for the checkers regardles of who's in the way.
The question is next year with him, Denny and Logano. This could get interesting...

I fully appreciate not only Carl's kind gesture of giving away the MIS trophy, I fully appreciate his kind gesture he performed on Kyle Busch at Bristol. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Good Deed

What a good gesture by Carl, funny some would think different. Glad to see some drivers think of others and don't just cherish there own egos.

Don't know why all the KB fans mention the bump and run by Edwards but fail to mention that Kyle tried to do the same on the next lap, just couldn't stay with him. Kinda shows me that he was blocking the fastest car and got moved out of the way. Don't give the championship to Wildthing yet, he seems to be easy to rattle and might fall apart at the end.

True but don't sell Kyle too short. Johnson had to come close a couple of times before he was able to seal the deal. It takes time to learn how to win under pressure.

I loved Carl's move at Bristol and That was very nice of him to give the trophy to the little guy. He gave his guitar he won at Nashville Busch race to someone too.

fuggetabout Kb. This thread is about the great gesture by Carl Edwards. What a great guy. That is something that often goes unnoticed. Many athletes go wonderful things for sick kids but it hardly gets mentioned. But Kyle being the jackass he is is everywhere. Thanks Carl.
