Parts Confiscated from the #99: NASCAR has confiscated the cylinder heads from the engine of the #99 Roush Racing Ford that Carl Edwards drove to victory in Saturday night’s Built Ford Tough 225 Craftsman Truck Series race at Kentucky Speedway. Truck Series Director Wayne Auton said the heads were taken to NASCAR's Research and Development Center and said a penalty notice was expected by Tuesday. Auton would not speculate on the severity of the potential penalties for Edwards, a rookie who won for the first time, or the team.(Winston Cup Scene Daily Newsletter)(7-14-2003)

Figured that would happen! I hope Tim can do good in that car!

I think PB4510 was intending to post this in the Kerry Earnhardt thread and posted here by mistake.

It's just a guess, but

Alright, 97. Let's not get off of the subject at hand (ROTFL) :nyanya:

UPDATE: NASCAR officials announced today that Doug Richert, crew chief of the #99 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team, has been fined $25,000 due to a rule infraction discovered last week at Kentucky Speedway, following the Built Ford Tough 225. In addition, NASCAR has penalized the team's driver, Carl Edwards, 100 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship driver points and team owner, Jack Roush, 100 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship owner points. During the event's post-race inspection process, the engine of the #99 Ford was found to have unapproved cylinder heads, a violation of Section 12-4-Q of the 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rulebook (parts and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules) and Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing).(NASCAR PR)
AND Roush Racing officials issued the following statement in response to the penalty handed down by NASCAR today against the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford F-150. "We had a quality control breakdown when our Mooresville, N.C., engine department decided to use a non-conforming part to build a back-up engine with the hope and expectation that it would not be needed at the race. We were wrong and we accept the penalty."(Roush Racing)(7-15-2003)

:( Ouch that's gotta hurt. They seem to be lately handing out the huge penalties in the CTS. In 2002 and 2001. Terry Cook received huge point penalties at Daytona.

100 points could cause that team 3 points positions down the line when all is said and done.

Ouch. Thats gotta hurt.

Thats just like a corked bat, if you know its illegal why have them? That's a management problem.

At least they didn't take away the victory. NASCAR just hates Jack Roush...they only took 25 points away from the cheaters at Daytona during the Winston Cup race. Before, during, or after the race...cheating is cheating. (or bending the rules, if you like.)

NASCAR just hates Jack Roush

This seems like a more serious violation than Cup drivers have been busted for. And when Terry Cook got caught cheating at Daytona the last 2 years, they penalized him big time. Since NASCAR hates Roush, who's going to beat Matt for the championship? :D

The question should be...how is NASCAR going to screw Matt out of the championship? But I'm not trying to think about that! B)

Illegal heads is a pretty damn big deal. I would have taken the win away.

Oh and the fines at Daytona were for stuff that was found before the cars went out onto the track as well.

Carl Edwards was interviewed and one of the questions asked was naturally about the engine and the penalty.

His response adds enough detail to make it somewhat more understandable.

NASCAR ANNOUNCED A 100-POINT PENALTY THIS AFTERNOON FOR A RULES INFRACTION FOUND IN THE POST-RACE INSPECTION FOLLOWING YOUR WIN LAST WEEK IN KENTUCKY. WHAT ARE YOU THOUGHTS ON THE SEVERITY OF THE PENALTY? "That was a spare motor that's been riding in the truck all year. I'm sure it was just a quality control issue. I was there for the tech inspection and it was a minor, minor misfit of a gauge on the motor. That's not anything other than a spare motor riding along in the truck. We would have run that motor at Daytona, Bakersfield, anywhere if we needed to. Let me tell you, neither Doug Richert, myself or anybody on that team would do anything to jeopardize our performance by knowingly running an illegal part."

FROM YOUR UNDERSTANDING, COULD THIS HAVE BEEN PERFORMANCE ENHANCING? "I'm not a motor guy and that's what NASCAR determined. If it was a performance enhancement, it was not intended at all. It's just one of those cases that's there's so many rules and this team was put together so fast at the beginning of the year that something was overlooked. That infraction was not what won that race for us. That win was due to the setup on the truck and going there and testing; that's what got us to victory lane and that's what's going to get us there again."
