This is something that many here have said before. I wonder if NASCAR will listen?

Carl Edwards Suggests Changes To Sprint Cup Series Cars

NASCAR hates it when I say this, but I firmly believe that we should not be racing with downforce, sideforce and all these aerodynamic devices. We do not need splitters on the race cars and giant spoilers.
What has happened, in my humble opinion...(is) it is pretty common sense that if all the cars are very similar and all the drivers are really good – which we all think we are – and we are all within a tenth of a second of each other but are relying on this clean air and downforce to make the cars go that speed, then by definition, if the guy in front of you is disturbing the air, then your car is not going to be able to go as fast as it could in clean air.
So why don't we get rid of these aerodynamic devices and race cars on racetracks with tires that are softer? ... That is my opinion on how to make the cars and the drivers able to do more and put it in the drivers' and crew chiefs' hands. I think that is important.
I don't know if that will make more exciting races, but it sure as hell will make a guy able to go up through the field if he has a fast race car, and I think that is exciting.

From here.

Having the car sealed to the track just doesn't allow air onto the nose of the trailing car.

I'd say let's start with those softer tires and go from there. I've said that for a long time. Maybe we need one of those tire wars like back in the day.

What if each team had one extra set of softer tires that could only be used on their last stop. Some may go for it, some may go with the harder set. Whichever they use, they would give up the other set. That should create some strategy and speed differences for passing action late in the race. If a team risks going with the softer tires with too many laps left, they could pay a heavy price.

In others words, pull an open wheel, and say "You have to use at least one set of x-colored tires per race"?

No, not like that. Say the race allows each team to use 6 sets of tires during the race. Each team would recieve 6 sets of long run tires, and 1 set of softer short run tires. You aren't required to use the softer tires, but if you do you can't use the 6th set of long run tires.

I'm going to change it a little from what I originally said. Teams could use the soft set anytime they wanted, but they don't have to use them at all. The softer tire would be real fast, but it would wear out much faster. That would put a big strain on the 5 sets of long run tires you get. It would certainly promote strategy and we would see a lot more passing.

Are you agreeing with Carl Edwards  Am I in the Twilight Zone or something;)

No, Carl is agreeing with me. For more than 2 years I've been wishing NASCAR would do this. Then MoeJoe told me Bobby Allison was saying the same thing. Now Carl is onboard.

I'm a real opinion shaper. ;)

Definitely a legend in your own mind.

Hey, I didn't think that they provided you with internet service until 9am. Are you on good behavior or something?

I have no problem with that as we're all spin doctors - in our own way ;)

Did you pick up on Kurts crazy Carl referance after the race? We raced hard and there was some contact, but nobody lost their cool and we both finished the race. In 2010, while Carl was in the middle of wrecking Brad 3 or 4 times, he took a break to slam Kurt into the wall after taking the checker flag at the Daytona summer race. Kurt has door slammed Carl coming to the line, but Carl prevailed. Carl then rammed Kurt into the wall twice, knocking off his front wheel and totaling his car. Kurt asked why Carl can't race hard without flipping out. Since then, Kurt makes this referance after there is hard racing without the insanity.

You guys should subscribe to my Stock car white paper. It will help you understand all this stuff better. ;)

Oh, that White paper comes on a handy roll. :D

On a side note, when I bought my house as a younger man, my friends decided - immediately after closing - that it'd be a good idea to COMPLETELY cover it in toilet paper. Thanks, guys.

Yeah, I'm sure I deserved it and/or payed them back over the years.

Look at the bright side. They didn't put a paper bag of dog sheet on your porch one night, light it on fire and ring the bell then run and hide behind some bushes. we ruined a friends slippers that way. He was so pissed, we waited a week before telling him it wasn't the neighborhood kids fault.

One Sunday night, the 5 of them picked up my old M30 and wedged it between 2 trees on my front lawn. There I am at 6 AM on a Monday morning cutting down a 30 foot tree so I could go to work. lol

LOL. One of the main perps in my case was a friend that when we were but younger lads and drinking one night, had a bit too much and passed out. Now, this guy was a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan and had just bought a very expensive Maple Leafs jersey so I decided it would be a good idea to get a pair of scissors and remove the crest from the chest of said jersey. He wasn't happy.

That would be grounds for blood shed.

Think he's right. The car has evolved into a F-1 type where a golf ball size dent takes you from being a top 5 car to a middle of the pack runner. Goodyear learned it's lesson after the tire fiasco at Indy. But have they gone in the extreme opposite direction? Seems tires lose a second or two but they don't seem to wear out like before, beads melt before cords show today.
