So, I finally sat down and watched the movie Cars and thoroughly enjoyed it. I found that the sound of the real cars got my blood going, longing to see the real cars going around the track again. Anyway, as I said, I enjoyed the movie a lot.

So here's where I would like some opinions, if you have any. Keep in mind that the movie was a fantasy and as such, any opinions are just that, unless one of you were involved in the writing of this movie. So, we know of the three entrants who are going for the Piston Cup, one was the King, and driving the #43 Petty Blue car with a wing on it made that a slam dunk that this car was Richard Petty. Young Lightning was a rookie, so that could have been anyone, but who do you think was the inspiration of Chick Hicks? This was a guy/car who had never won the title but would do anything to win it all. I've got some ideas, but I'd like to hear others first before I give mine.

And who would have been Doc Hudson? Got to go back some time for that one.

I liked it, what i noticed (i watched it in school, had more than enough time to take critique notes) was other than for legal reasons, there were only 3 things that were fake. I don't remmeber the exact 3, but they were still minor.

Lightning could very easily be hamlin, but the movie was before then, so hard to say.

Chick Hicks is mark martin i think. No championships but has nothing to lose.

I wonder iof hudson might be Curtis Turner or the eldest earnhardt? Give me the year the wall hangings said and i bet i can dig up some timely headings.

Its not Ralph Earnhardt. The Fab. Hutson Hornet was a real car, and it did win some cups.

Chick Hicks...Mark Martin, with a younger Dale Sr attitude.

Lighting...I would say a mix of JR and Edwards. (yes i know jr was in the movie, but you never seen him on the track racing)

Well, Marshall Teague and Herb Thomas actually drove the Fabulous Hudson Hornets --- so it could have been either one of them. However, Tim Flock also drove a Hudson.

I found the scene of The King tumbling down the frontstretch in the last race fascinating --- it was almost roll for roll a copy of Richard tumble down the frontstretch at Daytona.

Lappy --- I spent hours watching and re-watching the movie with my little grandson over Thanksgiving. If you watch closely, Junior is on the track in the first race at Bristol. Only a fleeting glimpse, but he is there.

As for the inspiration for Chick Hicks, that's hard to say. The personality is much too different for Mark Martin. I'm going to stick my neck out and say Alan Kulwicki may have been the inspiration.

Iv seen the movie 5 times, and never seen Jr on the track, guess i need to watch really close next time! lol

Some interesting ideas there. I just can't say that to me, Hicks was inspired by Martin. Mark might have fit the fact that he hasn't won the title, but in the end of the movie, Hicks did win, and Marky is still without the trophy. I guess I'd say that Kurt Busch would be my quess for the part of Hicks. As for Doc Hudson, that's a bit harder. His trophies were from 51 to 54 I believe, so that would rule out for sure Earnhardt, and Ralph didn't win any the title. I thought about Ned Jarrett, but I don't think he drove a Hudson.

Mag...
there were only 3 things that were fake

Uh, did you actually watch the movie? Maybe those little pin stripes on the back of Sally Carrera got you a little too excited. This was an animated movie, dude. It was all fake except the sound. I know, you were talking about the facts of the movie, but even there, it was mostly fantasy. So get your mind off those cute little pin stripes. :)

I've been doing some thinking --- dangerous, I know. LOL

Chick Hicks could also have been inspired by Big E in his early years. He was rough around the edges, and something of a wildman. ;)

Something? :) That would be a good answer, but I just didn't think that he fit in that role. Had the film been circa 1980, that would fit, but I figured it was a bit later than that.

How about an Ernie Irvan?

Got the movie for Christmas. And TRL you are right JR is on the track at the 1st of the movie. I fell a sleep right after Lighting gets his lucky sticker dirty...then woke up as the credits came on.

Doc Hudson would 2 drivers. Herb Thomas and Tim Flock. In the movie Doc has 3 Piston cup from the year 1951-1953. Herb won the "cup" in 1951 and 1953 and Tim in 1952. Since the movie is based on cars, i would say this one is not really based on a driver as much as the car its self.
