Censorship?

The roar of powerful engines is an integral part of the racing experience for most fans. But, for a growing number of NASCAR spectators, the sounds of cars is only a muffled distraction. Instead, they put on their headphones and tune into the radio frequencies that give them the behind-the-scenes conversations between pit crews and drivers, and a host of other colorful voices. The unguarded comments of drivers, crew chiefs, track officials and TV crew members may be in limited supply. One of the rumors around NASCAR is that new title sponsor Nextel might have some say in monitoring those communications. After all, that is their business.

Can anybody say "Pay per listen" monthly fees to hook in to the radio scanners...Netell will changes a lot of things for NASCAR, none will be free.

Sad to say. Nascar or Nextel is a business. Anything they can do to make money they will do. :(

That will be horrible if you have to pay to listen to the scanner. Milking the fans of every penny has got to stop! :bigfight:

And, if you don't want to hear colorful language leave your scanners at home. To the drivers and the crews this is not entertainment its their job.

the day this happens will be the last race i go to, hell the cost of going to the races now is bad enough, if i can't have the pleasure of listing to my scanner i'll just stay at home.

example: when i first started going to races my 4 tix for the Bristol races were 120.00 per race or 240.00 for both the spring and fall races, thats a total of 8 tix @. now my 4 tix for both races cost 1060.00. I have to buy both bush and cup tix so that is a total of 16 tix.

we go to both BMS races both Daga races both Richomnd races and to both Darlington races our cost for these races will be about 6000.00 this year
You know what; does anyone need to buy a scanner, i could buy a boat and listen to the races at the lake on sunday for what it cost.

Hey de7xwcc, if you spend any more money it would be cheaper to buy and run your own two car team! ^_^

got that right hell i don't know what is wrong with me,
Damn i must have it bad!!!!!!!!!

Didn't you folks see the handwriting on the wall when Kurt was penalized for talking on his radio at Daytona last year?George Orwell would be proud of these guys.Nextel radios are something I use everyday...and carrier pigeons would be more reliable.I seriously doubt if these guys can pull it off.Look for the Wal-Mart cup racing series as soon as this Nextel sponsorship crap is over.

I think that is bullsh*t. Ever since Corporate sponsors have taken a major role in sports today they have really taken it to the fan. Look at ball parks today...the price for a dog is more than $6. And a beer for goodness sake is like $7.

I will not be the least bit surprised if Nextel charges people. I mean loook at how many people attend these races. All Nextel is looking for is the dollar signs. i say stop screwing the fan and let us enjoy our racing without going broke. Just my $.02.

Maybe I'm just hopeful, but it seems like it would be too risky (for the drivers safety) to go messing with the radio setups. I just don't see the drivers having to 'Nextel' to the pits...or wreck ahead commands from the spotters....

With that being said, is it even possible to charge for or scramble scanner use? I know you have to get 'channel' list, but once you know the channel you can listen all day...right?

Let's hope they don't go meddlin'....

I'm tellin ya, this wouldnt be happenin if we had Visa, Budweiser or McDonalds as our title sponsor.

Man I love the colorful language. DJ is always telling some NASCAR official to kiss his ass when they do not allow an 8th man over to clean the windshield. :D

i think i read on jayski a few days after the Nextel deal was annonced that this rumor was started.

Nextal rep denied this big time....saying that allowing fans to listen to their scanners is part of the sport and they dont want to mess that up

If Nextel has anyone in public relations worth their weight in dirt, this is true....

What a NIGHTMARE this would be for them....You get a hundred thousand fans (those who go to races) who are REALLY vocal and loyal working against you and it won't take long before you actually see a drop in profits...

Word of mouth (internet) is one of the most powerful tools and keeping a good public image is paramount.

let's just hope this is case with Nextel....I guess we'll see......
