For those of you like me who have no use for the chase and still think the champion should be the driver who accumulates the most points over the entire season, here is your updated champions list.(# of championships)
2004 Gordon(5)
2005 Stewart(2)
2006 Johnson
2007 Gordon(6)
2008 Edwards
2009 Johnson(2)
2010 Harvick
2011 Edwards(2)
And for those of you who think that anyone who wins a race during the first 26 races should be in the chase, Stewart would not have been in the chase this season. Food for thought

Things would cartainly be differant with Gordan only 1 title away from Earnhardt and Petty. Johnson and Edwards would both have the same amount of titles.

But these titles arent really that clear cut anyway. Since everyone knows the chase will pretty much reset the points for the top 12 drivers the first 26 races are mainly just racing for top 10's and solid lead lap finishes and perhaps not focused soley on wins?

Can anyone post how the cup winners would be if they went back to when NASCAR gave points based on the amount of the purse?

Seriously, it is what it is. All of the drivers know what the current points system is and they all race under the same system.

It's hard to say who would have won some of those years had there not been a Chase. Because the drivers leading after 26 races would have raced differently during the last 10 races and might have maintained their lead. Stewart in 2009 is a great example. He led going into the Chase and had a sizeable lead. If the points weren't reset, he probably would have taken a different approach and might have maintained his points lead. But we'll never know.

exactly. The chases changes the way the teams look at the whole season. they race differently during the first 26 then they do the last 10. So if there were no chase who knows how the teams would have looked at the 36 races as a whole.
