Qualifying changes en route to Pocono

ThatsRacin.com Report

Pocono Raceway has announced a new Saturday qualifying format for its two NASCAR Nextel Cup races in 2005.
Nextel Cup qualifying will anchor Saturday's activities at the Long POnd, Pa., track, which will also have ARCA qualifying and the Pocono 200 ARCA race.

After Saturday qualifying, NASCAR will impound the race cars. Teams will not be permitted to work on the cars except in cases approved by NASCAR. This move will force the teams to use the two practice sessions on Friday to "set up the cars with race setups" rather than "qualifying setups."

Fans at Friday’s practice sessions will be treated to race-like conditions with drafting and large packs of cars running in tight formations as the teams work to dial in their cars for Sunday’s race. Friday will consist of more than two hours of Cup Series practice and more than two hours of ARCA practice.

The Pocono 500 weekend is set for June 10-12, 2005 and the Pennsylvania 500 weekend is set for July 22-24, 2005. Detailed weekend schedules will be announced in the near future.

Pocono, in my opinion is usually one of the very good races. I like the track.

agreed.

I'm not so sure about the impounding policy after qualifying though, although it might be a good thing and might keep "Flyin' Ryan" from getting so many poles in a season. :growl:

I do like the impounding idea as well. And I am with you 24Thunder, it will be interesting to see if Ryan can get as many poles with a car that is set up for racing.

I believe that it will bring Ryan down to the level of the rest of the field.
