UPDATE: A highly placed source within NASCAR said that changes to the format for the 2007 running of the Chase for the Nextel Cup will not be announced until January, probably during the annual Lowe’s Motor Speedway Media Tour. Although the official did not disclose specific changes, there is widespread sentiment among teams and drivers that race winners ought to receive a higher bonus than the 10-point margin a winner now receives compared to second-place finishers. Another, though considerably more controversial, option would be to score the drivers in The Chase separately than the other 33 cars in each race. Thus, the highest-finishing Chaser would get 10 points, while the driver who finishes last would receive just 1 point.(Ford Racing)(11-4-2006)
UPDATE: NASCAR will not adopt a separate points system for the drivers in the Chase for the Nextel Cup next year, according to Chairman Brian France, who was on hand Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway for the running of the Dickies 500. What is likely to change, France said, is the 400-point threshold for drivers outside The Chase being eligible for it. And he said NASCAR is on its timetable to re-evaluate The Chase after the completion of its third running. “Listen, if you look at history in sports, playoff formats are adjusted quite a bit over many years,” France said. Teams are added, conferences are changed around, teams are moved in and out. It all affects who makes the playoffs. Baseball went to another round of playoffs. Lots of changes happen. It should not be looked at as unexpected [in NASCAR]. Right now, we have a good [points] battle. That’s why we never said we were going to do a big change. We just said we were going to look after three years—it was enough time to look at how three years had unfolded and see if there were any adjustments we could make to the format.”(Ford Racing)(11-6-2006)
UPDATE 2: "We're going to do something to make the win more important,'' France said. "That's something very important. There will be some other adjustments that we consider and they'll be small, by definition, modest changes. It won't be a revelation.'' France stated a winner might benefit in ways other than more points."It may not just be that,'' France said. "There's lots of ways to make a win more important.'' What about a separate points system for the title contenders? Some drivers have suggested NASCAR adapt that. "I don't think you're going to see races within a race and all that other stuff,'' France said. Another area of debate is the Chase field. The top 10 drivers and anyone within 400 points makes the Chase. So, what about expanding the field? "No, it's not on the table,'' France said. "We like the 10. Ten races, 10 drivers.''(Roanoke Times)(11-6-2006)

I still think you'll see this happening during the winter too;
years ago without notice NASCAR implemented the top 35 rule, which with Robby starting a brand new team it really hurt for the first year, because once you get behind the 8ball missing races it's next to impossible to catch up. It took Robby 2 years and finally he's been locked in and still struggling at times, but not doing to bad for a single car team.

SO.............. it brings me to these thoughts about ALL the new teams that will be fighting for those few availible slots to race.
What is NASCAR going to do? There will be 7 or more new teams starting up that will be supported by a new manufacturer injecting BIG bucks into NASCAR, with lots of big name, big money sponsors supporting these new teams. There will be MORE highly financed teams trying to get their foot into the door of NASCAR for full time participation than spots availible to race into???????

My prediction is that over the winter NASCAR will AGAIN change the qualifing rule to lock in only the top 25, opening more slots so these teams have a better chance. Looking at the present points standing the only "big time" team that would effect is the #18 Interstate Battery team, but it would once again throw Robby outside looking in having to struggle again to make the shows.

With 3 of the biggest names in the sport missing The Chase the last 2 years and with Stewart stinking up The Chase by winning, you knew some type of change would come.

Interesting look at the points under the old system:

You still living in the past? Reminds me of those people who still have Kerry/Edwards stickers on the back of their cars. Ya gotta git over it or it'll give you ulcers. :einstein:

Not living in the past, just relaying interesting information. BTW, it came from Jayski, maybe he's living in the past. :D

Okay, I take that back about you. Good for you.

It seems that there are many people who love to manipulate figures and I do think that jaski is one of them.

But still, there are still many vehicles that have those Kerry/Edwards stickers out there, and ... I do believe they are honking their little horns off. :)
