Won"t hijack the Davey Allison thread but what's your thoughts on where na$car would be today if not for Sr's untimely death.
No doubt he would have been in the car a few more years, maybe #8? Would Jr be a real contender under his father's guidance? Would we have this stupid chase format or would Sr have said no way and kicked brain in the jimmy?

I'd like to think he might have #8.
Jr would be a constant threat each week in DEI equipment and maybe have #1 under his belt, maybe #2.
We wouldn't have this stupid chase format

Maybe -- but if Rob Moroso, Tim Richmond, Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki had not died so young, I doubt Earnhardt would've won seven championships.

Even with that, Earnhardt never would've won a seventh championship had Ernie Irvan not wrecked at Michigan. Irvan had it going that year.

That could be said by almost anyone at any year Andy. Had Marlin not crashed then Jeff Gordon would just have 3.

I'd think Dale would of won #8. Won won 85 races.

I think think we would have the chase, and you could still use an open face helmet.

and the cot would be drastically different (or history) so you could actually race in it.

Andy, sometimes you make some pretty silly observations just about anything, but I couldn't agree with you more on this. You obviously weren't able to watch Richmond and Moroso race, and more than likely weren't old enough to appreciate Davey and Alan, but you hit the nail on the head. Of course there were others as well that died well before their time. Many people believe that Adam Petty was the next "Richard Petty". Speculation is fun and of course, everyone has the own opinion. Personally I don't think the Sr. would have won another title though still very competitive. Things have become much more equal, but that means that the driver has more input in the results and of course we all know how aggressive ol' Ironhead was. All he really wants to do is pull your chain. :) As for Jr., I do think that the death of his father has had a negative effect on his driving, that and his bad crash in the Lemans race at Infineon back in 2004. I've always heard it said that a driver has no fear until he has a really bad crash. Then...

I don't think Dale would have gotten an 8th championship either. Truth be told, I actually thought he was going to hang it up after 2000. I certainly doubt he'd have hung around long after 2001.

It can't be understated how different things would be if he was still with us though. It's amazing how much pull Earnhardt had. Knowing the way he and Bill Jr. were, he would have been over Brian's shoulder every step of the way after he took over. I honestly believe that if Dale expressed disapproval with any of his big plans for NASCAR, Brian would not do it.

There are an awful lot of "what if's" in NASCAR. As a die hard Petty fan I have to wonder how things would be different if Adam Petty had lived. I'm not saying that he would have won championships, although you never really know. I'd have to believe, though, that if nothing else the Pettys would still be really involved in the sport and that would be a good thing for a lot of us.

I know that there were a lot of newer fans, with no appreciation of history, who wanted the Pettys to just go away after many years of running poorly. For a lot of us, though, having a Petty to cheer for every week was still a good thing, even though we knew they wouldn't win.

I don't think Dale would've won an 8th title. I believe he was gonna call it quits from at least full time racing after 2001.
