Chevrolet Clinches NASCAR Nextel Cup Manufacturers Championship - Title is 29th for Chevrolet since 1952 and 25th in Modern Era (since 1972): Jeff Gordon's victory in the Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 23 clinched the 2005 manufacturers championship for Chevrolet in NASCAR’s premier division. With four races left in the season, Chevrolet has collected its 29th manufacturers crown and the 25th of NASCAR’s Modern Era, which began in 1972. A total of six different drivers have contributed to Chevy’s 16 victories in 32 races thus far this season. Chevy drivers who have posted wins this season include: Tony Stewart (5), Jeff Gordon (4), Jimmie Johnson (4) Kevin Harvick (1), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (1), and Kyle Busch (1). The 2005 manufacturers championship continues Chevrolet’s dominance of North America’s most popular motorsports series. Since 1972, GM Racing has earned 27 of the 34 manufacturers titles, with Chevrolet collecting 25 of those for an impressive .79 winning percentage (Buick has won the title twice). To date, Chevrolet leads all manufacturers with 572 race wins, 448 wins in the Modern Era.
