In honor of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 50th anniversary, here is a video showing how far crash technology has come in the last 50 years.

1959 Chevrolet Bel Air Vs. 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.

According to test data, the driver of the Malibu would have suffered a slight knee injury. The driver of the Bel Air would have been killed instantly.

Excellent! Nothing like automobile carnage on a brisk cool morning, it smells like,,,like antifreeze!

We'd get those films in the office all the time, loved'em.:D

I forcastmany persons wondering why the bel air was crashed instead of restored...

Does noone else wonder how it is that all that miraculous energy absorption tech in the malibu only works one way? Or that the Belair, which should weigh about 1000lbs more than the Malibu didn't push the much lighter car off the centre point of the impact? Or that even though the front of the Belair shreds, you can't see the engine? My father drove a '66 malibu into a snowbank at highway speed. Didn't even tweet the body enough to bind the door. My mother t-boned a '78 Malibu with her '70 Nova (that ran a stopsign).... and the only mark on her car was a small dent in the fender above the headlight. Dad and I banged it out in an afternoon. The other guy was a right off.

Sorry, but all the captions aside, I'm calling bull**** on this one. Maybe the new Malibus hold up well in accidents ... I sure hope they do since that's what my missus drives. But a '59 Belair doesn't fold up like that ... ever. Anyone who's ever been to a demolition derby knows better.

Also, did noone notice the banner on the side of the Belair? The INSURANCE institute for highway safety. Gee, do you think they might have an ulterior motive? Anyone have insurance quotes for a 2009 Malibu and a '59 Belair?

Judging from the trim and emblem that's a Impala. And that's how we used to roll. Except for those rims.:D

Yeah, but I don't recall all that many cars that had the windshield hood. Saw a lot of those in the 70's and 80's especially on tricked out vans.
