Richard Childress and some investors are going to turn 70 some acres close to his home into a winery. He's got plans for a hotel as well. He said that he has been touring wineries in California for well over 10 years now and thought it would be great to start one here in North Carolina. North Carolina has quite a few wineries and the industry is continuing to grow. The site of the winery will be just south of Winston Salem at US 52 and US 64. Sounds like an interesting project. There are several wineries close by us, but we just haven't visited any yet. Hey, there are tons of racing shops close by and we haven't gone to see them either. :(

I wasn't aware that there were wineries in NC. What type of grapes do they grow? Do you have any recommendations, I'm a wine lover.

From some newer reports coming in I'm hearing that Childress will be specializing in Sour Grapes.

nascarwoman, you will find all the info you want here... http://www.ncwine.org/grapegrowing.htm I'm still one of those snooty European wine lovers, though I have found a few Napa Valley reds that I like. I prefer reds overall and just about everyone of them suit me fine. I guess the best wine I have tasted was US made. Guenoc Cabernet Savignon is such a wonderful wine, but unfortunately, I can't get it here. I've even written to the vinyard and asked them where I might find the closest store. They put me in touch with the distributor for this area and they told me I could get it in certain stores here. Wrong, they don't carry it. Anyway, if you can find it, give it a try.

Thanks, Buck I'll look around for it. Have you ever tried Opus One. It was a wine made by a partnership of Mondavi and Rothschild. Great, soft red. Expensive, $40-$55 a bottle, but well worth the price. It is getting harder to find, however.

Hey Buck, if you're a fan of white wine and don't mind drinking domestic, I found a great one at Fess Parker Winery. Yup. old Dan'l Boone is into making wine these days. His stuff is good and moderately priced. I prefer his whites to his reads, but both are good.

I'm primarily a white wine lover, but I do like a deep fully bodied red every now and then.

nascarwoman, I'm a bit cheap to pay that much for a bottle of wine. I try to stay under $15 and prefer to stay under $10. There are some great buys out there if you look. I used to get the Wine Spectator and I would look for wines that were at least grade 85 or above. Sometimes, it's just the name that makes it expensive. One of the best buys in both reds and whites is a Chille wine, Walnut Crest. Anytime a newpaper writes a story about this wine, it dissapears from the shelves for a while, then people tend to forget. You can consistantly buy a bottle of Walnut Crest for close to $5.00. Their Merlot has been rated as one of the best. I guess since it's from Chille, people just don't want to try it.

I have tried that one, Buck. You're right it's very good.

The one thing I never do is buy on name only. I always taste first. Some of the best wines come from little known places.

I've been sampling some Australian wines recently. Black Opal is good , price is reasonable.

Are you into any of the sparkling wines? I'll admit I have a soft spot for champaigne. I like the snobby French kind, as opposed to domestic, but they can be pricey. I treat myself to a good French champaigne every year for my birthday.Extravegant, yes.....but I'm worth it.

I wish him lots of success with this venture. So much so, in fact, that he retires from racing altogether.
