Closing Threads

Are threads now to be closed whenever a post is made about a driver that may offend someone?

I don't believe that members of this board should be penalised because of the lack of objectivity on the part of fans of drivers who simply do stupid things.

I've read some pretty ignorant remarks about my favorite drivers and those threads were never closed. If the spelling of someones name is going to be that contenious of an issue, should using nicknames that are anything but flattering be allowed?

For me to make a post and then demand the thread be closed is simply wrong.

I guess my question is this, what constitutes closing a thread? I also have seen a lot worse topics and they were never closed. Where is the consistency?

Very good question. Closing a thead defeats the sole purpose of a discussion.

This has gotin out of hand Recently. Members complaining the mods dont do enough, then when the mods do something some members complain there doing to much. Seriously what do you want ?

Keep on and your likely to get a set of strict rules, or the mods just wont want to do anything.

I'm not complaining, just stating a simple fact. They do a great job, no doubt about it, its just sometimes inconsistency over-rules. But with the way some people post on here, I just don't know..

I'm not sure closing threads is the answer......it works, but perhaps not in a way that solves the problem. Most of the members here enjoy a lively discussion. But most don't like the name calling, innuendos and digs that a few seem to take some pleasure in posting. I think the problem could be solved in a different manner.......a pm or two or even an open cautionary comment in the thread that is in question. I don't like the closing of threads to cut off the inflammatory stuff. We, as members, can help prevent the problem.........actually pretty easily by not getting carried away with digs and comments we know will cause a negative response from others. Overall, I think the mods do a pretty decent job......but sometimes they could step in with a gentle reminder when it occurs (preferably in a private manner).

I too think the mods do a good job, but lately it just seems there are times that something should be done they don't do anything. ANd yet a comment gets a little heated they close it. I am not asking for more strict rules I guess just more consistency in enforcing the ones already in place.

Sometimes the Mods have to make choices that some people don't like. If someone post a tread that cold get out of controll and the Mods know it they have no choice. Some poster get their jollies by bashing drivers. Well the fans of that driver will fire back. First thing you know a simple tread has turn into WW3.

Ya know; I left a place where it was almost encouraged to bash drivers.
It got sickening. The place did NOT do a thing to stop the driver name
calling, nor the attacks on other posters.
I liked THIS board, because everyone seemed sensible, and fun-living.
There are some really great posts here from some people that do know their NASCAR!!!
I thoroughly enjoy reading those posts. I feel I learn new things and it
helps me to better understand this sport I love so much.
I like the teasing and fun joking around, but deliberately changing a drivers name to be in the opposite gender is not a joke nor a tease. It's just plain poor taste and bad judgement.
I gonna quit now. I think the moderators did the right thimg! And I applaud them.
;)

We are people, and drivers are people. They aren't any different from us... they just have a really kickass job!! ^_^

So with everyone having time to cool off and reflect is Tony - Toni any more of a dig than Jeff - Jeffy? Is it the name or the poster? Sometimes we know what that poster meant but not the other poster. How many who were crying gator tears over this slight to Tony has participated in the "Gordo is Gay" debate? Or, did you just sit by and accept it in glee without challenge. Gordon is not my favorite driver but I have found that I was one of the few that came to his defense in those debates. And, maybe I even stepped over the line a time or 2 in my vitriol towards Dale Jr., who appears to be a board favorite, to show that anyone could type anything. It really does not add to a discussion by demeaning the driver. And, I would hope that we could talk racing and leave their personal lives out of it.

Oh, and does this mean I can't still call him Lil'E?

I think everyone is basically saying the same thing about driver and member slams. There is a huge difference when teasing or joking when posting. A world of difference in calling Jeff Gordon "Jeffy" when praising him for his very strong win a week ago and calling Tony Stewart "Toni" when speaking of his apparent lack of temper control during the same race. One is affectionate and one is demeaning. Context and subject are what makes it a tease or a slam.

And being a Jr fan, I have no problem whatsoever with anyone calling him "lil E". I do it myself on occasion. :D But, again, it's how the post was put that may or may not make a difference. I'm probably the most guilty one here about calling Jeff Gordon "Jeffy".........I did it to make a distinction from the other two Jeff's in the Cup series. I have never used it in a demeaning way..........however, since I can see where it might get under someone's skin, I will refrain from using that nickname in the future.

Nicely said Dragonlady.... :D

and we sweated and sweated and boy did we sweat at the california speedway........

Being a Tony Stewart fan, I personally don't consider calling Toni demeaning. I think there's been more threads about Jeff Gordon which were probably demeaning (I'm also a big Gordon fan), but everyone has their right to voice their opinion as long as it's done without foul language. That's just my opinion. Remember Kasey Khane when he got into an accident (sorry don't remember the track) but his hands were shaking when he was being interviewed while he was drinking a coke or pepsi. If someone started to call him Kasie would people find that demeaning. Maybe people are just lashing out because of the person who writes Toni that way. :( Just my 2 cents.

I really don't think this thread was started for reopening the topic...

I believe that, overall, the mods do a dang fine job. Closing a thread because it seems to be getting out of hand seems reasonable to me. I am one who posted "close this thread please" because I recognize that the mods can't be everywhere at every moment or preruse each and every post 100% of the time.

A good debate is always welcome by me, and if I choose to ignore a poster or report the post, that's my choice.

Since the majority of members are against the "i" thing, what if I state TS from now on,would that be ok?
Some of U are reading way too much into this though,I've already said on several occassions that I never used the "i" as a gender bender term for TS,but if it's this upsetting to so amny fine long-term members, then I will adapt to make for a happier forum.
I would apologize, but I still don't feel that I've done anything wrong, just will go along with the PC crowd and hope the dust over this settles quickly. ;)

Let's take up a pool racer8.............we could get everyone plastered!! :D I got the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th round!!

Okay folks. Just so you know who I'm referring to when I'm talking about one of the the three Jeff's in the Nextel Cup series. Jeff is Jeff Gordon, Robby is Robby Gordon and JB is Jeff Burton. And to distinguish Johnny Benson, should he get another ride in the cup, he will be Benson. :D

Man, that took me all afternoon to figure out...........but it was so simple!!

I need a beer now...................

Good point :D

Just for the record, and then ill let it go. There is a lot of PM's usually between the mods and the posters when a thread is closed. and other mods are asked to look at the thread and verify if its digressing before the lock. Alot of times we are sent a report a post where a member is upset about the post so we go from there.

OK now about that beer, i'll have a couple to get started. :) i love a good party.
