CHARLOTTE – There have been video screens at NASCAR race tracks for several years to help fans follow the action.

Charlotte Motor Speedway hopes its new video screen will mark a new standard in the industry. After all, it will be the biggest high-definition screen anywhere at 80 feet tall and 200 feet long and CMS officials hope to have the Guinness Book of World Records put its stamp on the screen as the biggest in the world.

Built by Panasonic, the screen sits on the backstretch and will debut during the Sprint All-Star Race weekend.

“It’s awesome,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr., who took a look at the screen last week. “We’ll look at it. It’s obviously something that will catch your eye as you’re racing around.

“I feel like it’s a great addition to this race track. It’s something you will see at a lot of race tracks in the future.”

CMS officials have not said how much the screen cost. It has nine million LED lights on 158 panels. It weighs 165,000 pounds and sits on a 500,000-pound steel frame. The lowest part of the screen sits 30 feet above the race track.

It took 57 workers more than 11,000 man hours over four months to construct it.

“It will give [our fans] a whole new way to experience a NASCAR event,” CMS President Marcus Smith said.

The track will show a History Channel documentary on the video screen as part of the prerace show for the Coca-Cola 600 and the network’s sponsorship of the Nationwide race the day before.

The screen also will have advertising, generating revenue for the track.

But what about a movie? If Earnhardt Jr. had his way and could watch any movie on the big screen, what movie would it be?

“Stroker Ace,” he said.

More pics of CMS's HDTV here.

To be bigger than the one in Cowboy Stadium. It's a battle of the EGO's.Smith vs Jones.

I go to the races to watch the racing on the track, not to watch the same race on a TV screen. If I wanted to watch the race on a TV screen, I would've stayed at home.

Speaking for myself only, I appreciate that Phoenix International Raceway provides the paying fans a large screen HDTV for replays. It's nowhere as big as CMS's HDTV, but at least I can see replays of an incident that occurred opposite from where I was sitting.
I sat at the top row in Febuary thinking I would be able to see the entire track, and I could for the most part. It was still difficult, however, to determine what had exactly happened on the backstretch during the "big one". In years past, I would have to wait 'til I got home to see any highlights of the race that happened outside my vantage point. Now, I just look at the big screen.

Sure, one can rent or purchase one of the many gadgets NASCAR offers to watch live racing in the palm of your hand.
But I appreciate that NASCAR gives an alternative for those that choose not to use such devices.
Like you, I want to see live action on the track. But if I miss something big, the big screen is right there to inform me.

What's the point of this?

Is Bruton going to have the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at Charlotte Motor Speedway?

Or is he just thumping his chest some more?

Maybe he's trying to overcompensate for something on the small size?

don't know bout cowboys screen but in 2009 kauffman stadium in Kansas city did have the worlds largest screen at 110 ft. high and 90 ft. wide.

Kauffman was 110 ft by 90 ft (9900 sq ft)

Cowboys is 160ft by 72 ft (11,520 sq ft)

CMS is 200ft by 80 ft (16,000 sq ft)

You may be on to something. CMS is no stranger to the premiere of major motion pictures. Have you ever heard of the world-renowned, awe inspiring, blockbuster known as Sponge Bob Square Pants, The Movie? :growl: I was there along side of my children for that glorious event.

Anyhow, yes, I think it's just the chest thumping, mines bigger than yours, in your face type of thing. Hey, here's an idea..... How about we nix the extravagant ideas and lower that ticket price a little, quit charging me $6 for a beer, $5 for a coke, $3 for a dog? I mean big television screens are great and all but maybe if the race became more affordable, more butts would be in the seats? The novelty of a 200' television screen will wear off after five minutes but a savings on the ticket price or items at the concession stand just might bring some people back.

ok kauffman stadium is still the widest:biggrin:
That's because Kauffman is not HD- it's 5:4 (110/90 = 1.222), when HD is 16:9.

Cowboys and CMS are both 1080i I would guess, where Kauffman is just standard computer resolution (a binary multiple, probably 2560x2048, who knows)

Bruton does something extra for the fans and some of you idiots still can't make a post with out whining. Your moms must be proud. I hope Kyle Bush wins everything this week just to piss a few of you guys off.
