Coast Guard to end sponsorship with RCR
The United States government's budget ax reached all the way to Richard Childress Racing on Wednesday.
The United States Coast Guard announced it would not return as the primary sponsor for the No. 21 Busch Series Chevrolet in 2007 because of funding reallocations.
"Richard Childress Racing has been a terrific partner," said Adm. Thad W. Allen, U.S. Coast Guard commandant, "They have represented the Coast Guard extremely well both on and off the track, with numerous promotional events and an unprecedented level of success in the Busch Series this year,"
The No. 21 likely will be the championship car in Busch, with Kevin Harvick winning the points title. In 28 races, the team has scored seven wins (six with Harvick; one with Jeff Burton) and 19 top-five and 25 top-10 finishes. Harvick has raced the car 25 times, Burton three.
Harvick has a 619-point lead in the points standings with seven races remaining. He is on course to have the largest season-ending point margin in series history.
"We have been fortunate to spend some time with the brave men and women of the Coast Guard who are serving their country by keeping its maritime borders safe," Richard Childress said. "While we hoped they would return in 2007, we understand the Coast Guard's decision and will do all we can to win them the NASCAR Busch Series championship."
