Hi,

My family is coming to the US of A in August (from New Zealand) and are wanting to watch some good live racing action. Is there anything outside of the Watkins Glen event that is worthwhile going to?

We arrive in LA on the 3rd of August for 2.5 weeks. Your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Is that a Brocky avatar? Good ****.

If you're here for 2.5 weeks you might just miss the Bristol Cup race on 8/20; the Truck Series and Xfinity Series race there on 8/17 and 8/19 though. The Xfinity Series will be at Mid-Ohio on 8/13 and is usually a wild one, and PWC is at Utah Motorsports Campus that same weekend.

If you're already set on attending the Watkins Glen weekend, you're in for a real treat.

Cheers for the info, Dad's racing a Brock replica in NZ, Mr Marlboro advertising all around NZ!

OK, then is Watkins Glen worth while going out of our way for? Keep in mind we have been to Bathurst several times and a mix of other of AU and NZ touring car races. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The Glen is definitely one of the premier road courses in America and the NASCAR weekend there has been very exciting as of late, especially in the Cup Series. The last few years it's been one of the few tracks to actually see an increase in attendance.

If that's a bit too far out of the way then IMSA is having an event at Road America in Wisconsin that same weekend, another of the country's top road courses.

Boy, there isn't much going on out west at that time of year.

If it was me, I'd go for Bristol. It's going to be completely unlike the other races you say you've been to. The Glen is a great place, but you've already been exposed to a number of good road courses. Try something you can't get at home.

Xfinity will be at Mid-Ohio sports car course the weekend the Sprint guys have off it may be worth checking that out

USF2000, Pro Mazda, and Indy Lights will be at Laguna Seca September 10th and 11th. It's on the West Coast and would be worth checking out if you are still here.

Also, look up a dirt track that's close by on a Friday or Saturday night and go watch some Late Models. It's usually pretty cheap and always entertaining.

Not racing related, but the Watkins Glen area is geologically beautiful. I recommend anybody who goes to the track take a trip to Watkins Glen State Park.

If you are into checking out other forms of motorsports, Aug 9, a couple days after the Watkins Glen race, there is a Super DIRTcar Series big block modified race at Weedsport, NY (around an hour or so north of the Glen). Excellent short track racing at one of the nicest quality dirt track facilities in the USA.

I'm going to go a long with these other guys: go see the Bristol race. The road courses are great but Bristol is considered one of the best tracks on the circuit and we don't have many of the old school short tracks left on the schedule. You'll also be able to see the entire track and watch them beat and bang the entire race.

Also, if you're flying into LA realize that you aren't going to be able to tour America by car in a short amount of time or anything. A lot of tourists seem to think they can take day trips to Florida from LA or NY, they don't realize how big the country is. If you're going to go to an east coast race plan on flying there unless you feel like renting a car and spending a week on the road.
