Common Template

Found a little piece of info I had been curious about.

We learned late last season the this year there would be 32 templates designed to regulate the bodies of the Winston Cup cars. While we knew some of them would be common across all four makes, some of them would not be.

Of the 32 templates, 18 of them are designed to fit Chevy, Dodge, Ford and Pontiac. The other 14 are different for each make.

The nose and tail are different, the eye can tell you that. But I wonder where else the diferences lie.

Undercarriage? The amount of "flare out" there is above the rear tires?

Donno what I'm talking about here, which is pretty clear.

What I read was that the "common" areas would be the Greenhouse, rear deck and hood. that was in december so who knows what changed after that.

Nose, tail, sides and transitions to each..
The sides, which might include side window areas? That would leave a lot of variance area between the makes which affects the aero of the cars. The transistions from quarter panel to deck lid have long been another area where teams constantly tweak for aero advantage. Add th obvious differences between the noses and tails.

Seems the common ain't quite so equal as we might be encouraged to believe.
